And they CAN get rabies, it's just very uncommon. They can also carry other diseases and parasites. I am saying all of this partially to convince myself to continue not snuggling the baby 'possum that visits our yard looking for unguarded cat food

We have a feral cat that we're trying to take enough to come inside (he's been fixed and gets shots, at least), so we discourage wild animals from staying. Otherwise I'd likely make room for the opossum, but try to keep it wild. No food, no snuggles.
