Just finished @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social's Hummingbird Salamander. The protagonist is one of the best female characters I've ever read. The play between her psyche and her physical body in how she perceives herself and how others do too, is phenomenal. I'd read a book of this woman doing anything.

Middlebury Vermont--showing up!!! Talked to many who have been protesting since Nixon!!!! They brought their kids and grandkids. I heard one 8-year-old ask his dad "What's a dictator?" This is what democracy(and civics) looks like.

Just got back from seeing @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social chat w/ a room of mostly fans (there were some people trapped in the middle but they seemed ok) at SteepleJack hosted by @powells.bsky.social. Great convo & learned how much bureaucrats having affairs can shape one’s life. Great Sunday night.

Great history of science fiction by Ward Shelley in @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social’s great Wonderbook. Maybe @alicefraser.bsky.social & Realms Unknown can pic a strand and expand! Love the podcast & the book.

Saw @thebugle.bsky.social icon @mrnishkumar.bsky.social in Portland. His ‘what’s in my fridge’ set is spectacular! Hoping more @thebugle.bsky.social regulars will make it to America soon so we can make it great again.

Just finished @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social Annihilation. couldn’t help but think of a medieval mystic who was burned at the stake for her allegorical The Mirror of Simple and Annihilated Souls (I wrote my dissertation on her). Desiring annihilation has always been dangerous. Great Books!

Just finished @jordanharper.bsky.social’s The Last King of California. Like She Rides Shotgun, the cost of masculinity and all the physical and emotional violence it reaps paired with a page turning plot and gorgeous writing. Highly rec.

My piece “The Stoic Parent” is in #thenightwriterreview, along with other great pieces by the likes of @ucrlowresmfa.bsky.social’s Shannon Presby. I love reading it in print, but also online thenightwriterreview.com/the-stoic-pa...

Big fan of @aptshadow.bsky.social but ALIEN CLAY blew my mind. Prison camp on an alien planet and one of the best explorations of why people push back or not against authority—and it’s funny. World building, compelling characters, philosophically probing, it really has it all.

Just pre-ordered @nicholasbelardes.bsky.social The Deading. Can’t wait to read it—although with @sgj.bsky.social blurbing it, I know not to read it right before bed, lest nightmares abound.

Mary Beard at Portland's Literary Arts talking about Roman Emporers who suffocated their dinner guests by burying them in roses. Great way to spend a Thursday night.
