I refuse the simplifying lie that all phantoms are tortured spirits. Why can't some of the ghosts of the ruins of the leper hospital be the temporal echoes of compassion? Why won't some allow for ghosts of loving duty, the lingering shades of human kindness? – C. Josiffe
