Just look at how complex a villain Loghain is compared to how empty of a villain Elgarnan is because one got to be a man and the other had to be an avatar of lore and didn't get anytime to be anything but that avatar of lore.

Everyone becomes a stereotype, because they have to represent an entire species/culture/what have you because your setting has too much going on.
Or a trope, or a deconstruction.
You *can* have real feeling things in a FR setting, but that takes restraint / thoughtfulness that rarely gets shown.

Settings where you have gods known to be real and very human, tons of sentient races that are all basically human with one or two exaggerated personality traits, magic that is very common and largely a *solved* just don't tend to feel capable of being interested in anything but themselves.

Being out of shape isn't a moral failing nor a judgement on one's worth, but the type of people who join ICE are absolutely the kind of people who do think like that and imagine they are a superior breed of person so its very funny they getting a rude awakening to their lack of natural superiority.
