And Alice's mother finally sharing her part in the story.... wow!

The story would have been so much more compelling for me if Hailey was allowed to tell her side - what it was like meeting Alice and what she felt as the two became friends.

But the page-turning part was Alice and Hailey unraveling and following the threads left by Alice's father.

She has no interaction with anyone outside until Hailey moves in next door and learns to communicate with Alice using ASL.

This suspenseful and exciting story drops clues along the way (and the blurb tells us that Alice's father is a serial killer) but I was extremely surprised by the ending!

Alice, a young mute woman, is kept (what feels like) almost-captive by her parents.

looks like it had been gnawed.

Jessie deals with her grief and pain by watching the house and collecting stories about it. And when Jessie has a child, can she protect him from the hungry house across the street?

Jessie's family never fully recovers after she dares her 8-year-old brother Paul and his two friends to go into the forbidden house but Paul doesn't return. His friends said a monster came out of the closet and ate him. One of the friends also inexplicably lost part of his arm...

Sure by the creepy haunted house, but also by the emotional depth of the characters. Their strength and heartbreak and perseverance in dealing with the tragic history of the abandoned house on their street was one of the most haunting aspects of the book.

It's like being dropped into this world where you don't quite understand the language yet and it takes a bit to sort it out. So now that we're fully engaged, there had better be a sequel so we can find out what happens next OR a prequel to describe what happened before "Blackwicket"!!

The blurb doesn't begin to describe the detailed world-building in this story - with rich history, classes of magical abilities, realms of magical worlds, family lineages and alliances, and more.

That's probably the whole point, but it was mind-boggling.

So keep reading, because it all starts to make sense as Randall undercovers what's happening at the lodge and what role he will have to play.

What he finds at the lodge is creepy, sad, and disturbing.

I won't spoil anything that's not in the blurb, but will say that I found the beginning of the book a little hard to follow. I couldn't discern what were dreams, hallucinations, or supernatural events.

During World War II, Frances and Michael (the titular Guest Children) are sent to live with their aunt and uncle who own a lodge in Canada.

But after the war ends, relatives haven't heard anything about the children and Randall is hired to look for them.

Gorgeous Bell House, a family she didn't know, and Savannah itself are all enticing to Emily.

But why did her father change her given name? And what's in her grandmother's craft room and why does it keep calling to her?

And what was her father researching before his death?

For all of its haunted houses, rich history, beautiful scenery, hospitality... and of course, Bonaventure Cemetery.

So Thea struggles with what she wants to be: nurturing mother, loving wife OR powerful villain AND what she wants for her daughter. Maybe she SHOULD let her eat if she wants.

Original, darkly funny, heartbreaking, and horrific, and marvelous!

But Thea is more scared of her mother, a narcissistic energy vampire who made Thea's childhood miserable with her string of live-in boyfriends.

Because of this, Thea's always loved the female villains as they were powerful, conniving, brilliant, and gorgeous.
