I both agree with you that people are being too pedantic and am struggling because this is my area of expertise and have an involuntary reaction to this type of imprecise use of terms around a technical area

Inspired by your post I am proposing a policy that if you opt out of public school you are required to pay the equivalent amount that you are paying for private school to your local public school.
$50k / year for a 10th grader at your prestigious private HS means $50k in fees

If you have contracts with the U.S or European Gov., they often have access to large amounts of commercial data to support the work of contractors (e.g. www.fisheries.noaa.gov/new-england-...), I know I've seen similar resources from the ESA.
