Awhile back I decided to order a bunch of parts (bigbear choppers) and build up a chopper in the spare bedroom...took me a few years, and the help of a machine shop, but I got it done and it's been wicked ever since...

The Viking cabin became well known at faire over the following years, last time we setup the armor shop we put the cabin right behind it.

Of course, I had to buy a trailer, make a rope bed...fortunately I had an assistant

My friend is 6'8" so I decided to model out the cabin to make sure he would fit. I was planning to build it big enough for several of us to stay in. I designed one side so that the walls could be removed to form two tables, the roof raising to provide cover.

So, my third year of renfaire I decided I was going to build a Viking tent, no more sleeping in my armor wherever I came to rest in the field.

While describing it to a friend it occurred to me that a tent is just a cabin without walls so I sketched this out...

Just for fun, my higher-end armature from animationsupplies.net/proplus-arma...

I like it, but I can't really say it made me a better animator...

Step 10: You're Done!

Optionally, you can find a 90lb+ bow and traditional arrowheads and test your creation out (not while holding it!).

Step 9: I 'clamp' it down with weights so that the rawhide dries tight to the shield.
December 24, 2023 at 9:11 PM
Step 8: Attach the soaked rawhide. I lay it out on a towel to get some of the excess moisture off. In this example I used small nails to attach it, but I would typically drill holes through the rawhide and shield and stitch it on with artificial sinew (safer for dueling).
December 24, 2023 at 9:10 PM
Step 7: Time to pick out your rawhide! I have used scrap from the leather shop, dog bones, and prepared rawhide strips. No matter where you get it you need to make sure you have enough, and then soak it in water overnight. I sometimes soak it in coffee or some stain.
December 24, 2023 at 9:07 PM
Step 6: Rivet on the shield boss. I use copper rivets and my grandfather's ball peen hammer. Practice on scrap wood first.
December 24, 2023 at 9:05 PM
Step 5: Paint something ;)

I use acrylic paint with a matte top layer to protect it. Keep the shield boss in mind, but don't attach it yet.
December 24, 2023 at 9:02 PM
Step 4: attach linen to the face. I use Yes paste with finishing nails to hold it in place (clamps will distort the edge). Get a good stretch.
December 24, 2023 at 8:59 PM
Step 3: Shape and attach the handle, I use flat head nails and bend them over since that is how the historical handle I referenced was attached. I also stain the wood on the back side.
