on my second website conversion to a freebsd bastille jail. it's actually kind of nice! One gotcha is I'm starting to lose track of the levels of inception... am I outside in the host, or inside bastille, and if so which jail? inception!!

setting up certbot and nginx for freebsd - the automated tools have come a long way to make it easy and intuitive! I just had to understand a few things, and make sure to unblock 443 from my pf and it's all set!

@qlp Hi! I'm reading your proxmox on macbook pro blog post and thought I would send a link to the T2Linux project - that slipstreams the T2 security chip drivers on various linux distributions: https://t2linux.org/ that will make running linux on T2 Intel macs a bit easier. There is a Debian […]

A windy day, but with excellent visibility, on Angelus Peak, this past Sunday. #NelsonLakes

That was the first time I climbed it on this trip, but not the last! #aotearoa

Lately I've been establishing a highwater in the most Canadian of benchmarks: Apologies per Second. Via email, I can attain as high as 35 APS. In person, I can do 15 APS - still respectable, but nowhere near where I want to be.

Finished review on 1 out of 4 workshop pieces. didn't do anything else but I'm glad I finished one thing on my list!

25 Gbe card is here, together with the DAC cables. But there's 2 website migrations I have to do, as well as some clean up work, and then there's advent of code that's I'm trying for this year. Prioritization is key I guess.

Visual Studio 2026 is very different from VS 2022. I think I'm going to keep using 2022 community edition.

Home HPC back of the envelope figuring: around $1250 CAD gets me a decent compute node. Threadripper 2920 to 2050, 48-64g ram, 8TB U2 nvme SSD, a good case with PSU, Intel Arc card for DIY gpgpu, and a 25gbps network interface card.

I changed the link to my Windows 11 PC to an RJ45 sfp+ 10gbp link (on the PC is a built in Marvell Aqtion 10gbps on the motherboard) - and I had some disappointment with iperf3 until I read that on windows, iperf3 needs a ton of threads via -P to max out the […]

Spent a while working on this one. It's a music visualizer using a 10x10 grid of cubes. I tried a lot of different approaches to get this working. It uses Python with librosa to do the audio analysis, using STFT to pull per-frequency amplitudes.

My first approach was to use a driver-driven […]

I sound like a crazy person to myself, but I'm going into a deep dive into HPC, slurm, lustre, RoCE/Infiniband. I don't know where this is going to go, but I'm probably going to end up with way too many computers and way too many switches.

Thinking of buying a 48 core 1U server to play around with slurm controller and processing node. My controller will be on my existing freebsd system, with the 48 core 1U server running RHEL acting as a slurm processing node. They both will have 25gbe so I'll need to try to find some kind of […]
