When we approach the question of climate policy (and polity), it is almost always top-down, starting at the global or state level and then zooming in on concrete, local examples. It makes sense, too: world-scale crises demand a similar-scale approach to tackle them, and the failure to produce one is a cornerstone critique of the last 40 years of climate action taken in international and corporate dimensions. However, in the absence of the planetary subject, whose standpoint one casually takes when reflecting on the failures of climate policy, the analysis produced is often tautological: climate action is where dreams of globality come to die, because there is a glaring absence in the place of the subject that is supposed to implement it. What if we conduct a small thought experiment, then, and, using this conclusion as a premise, take off instead from the point where all of us inevitably start, an individual caught in history?
