“Merit based and colorblind” is when you determine who is good and bad purely by the coincidence of where a person or their ancestors were born

This theory paper feels like a culmination of everything I’ve learned thus far. It cites articles I’ve read as undergrads!! I tried to weave and contextualize social psych theories with history, sociology, political science, and ethnic studies. I hope it helps us understand US race relations better

A fun way to think about this is in Wicked For Good, Glinda is uplifted by the Wizard as a model witch while villainizing Elphaba. By juxtaposing Glinda against Elphaba, people overlook the true evil that the Wizard is doing. So just substitute Glinda = Asian, Elphaba = Black, Wizard = White

Another stereotype is Black men = hypermasculine and Asian men = effeminate, which ultimately make White men = default/ ideal. When Black men are seen as hypermasculine, this can justify police brutality. To understand anti-Black racism, I argue we need to understand role of Asian Americans in it

Consider the model minority stereotype of Asians. The term was created to juxtapose against Black people. I argue most social psych theories on Asian stereotypes can be seen as a racial contrast to Black stereotypes. Black-Asian contrast centers whiteness AND justify anti-Blackness

Drawing across disciplines, I argue that Asian Americans (and their stereotypes) are directly contrasted against Black people. Instead of seeing Asian as between White and Black people in racial hierarchy, I propose it is better to see Asian as polar opposites of Black people. This centers Whiteness

Honestly this was a very hard paper to write in midst of everything that’s been happening here… deportation is truly an inhumane policy…

Meritocracy is a form of system justifying ideology. Extending recent work on SJT by @efrenpolipsy.bsky.social, we found that stronger endorsement or meritocracy predicted more support for deportation and less worry about deportation for both Latinos and Asian Americans
November 25, 2025 at 9:47 PM
The first of the two is a collab with political scientist Nathan Chan. We used two waves of CMPS data (including the latest 2024) to examine relationship between meritocracy and deportation sentiments among Asian and Latino Americans
