Military historian. Great War Group Trustee. Written a couple of Great War books plus articles. Francophile, but also lived 30+ years in Germany so pretty European in outlook.
Nice account Michael. This map from the actual offensive a little better than the 1916 trench map you have used which has parts of the Redoubt in British hands.

I’ve got this image saved to point at anyone who feels the man was decent. All of his statements.

You've been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are trying to rescue you. Who's coming to save you?

The Nieuport Memorial commemorates 552 British officers and men who were killed in Allied operations on the Belgian coast during the First World War and have no known grave. Not one of the better known Great War memorials.

How on Earth can anyone excuse this level of neglect - posted (a recent photograph) as we approach 11/11. Sorry
@CWGC but this is a disgusting level of neglect and don't even begin to go with the environmentally friendly excuse.

Lovely short trip to Sutton Hoo last week. The exhibition is very well set up and with a campsite 10 minutes walk away! If you’ve not been then you really must.

One of the coolest photos of two of the most gifted climbers of their generation, Siegfried Herford and George Mallory at Pen y Pass, December 1913

Some French towns really knew how to build a Great War monument. Here’s one from Mamers.

I don’t think he’s on here but Stuart Humphryes, under the name BabelColour does some superb work cleaning up old colour photos. He does not colourise them. This photo from the Great War is an example. His work richly deserves a following.

Brilliant weekend in Brighton for the Great War Group Conference. Great seminars and two excellent Keynote from Tamara Scheer and Richard van Emden. Also Friday a themed evening on the Indian Army in the war. Plus lots of fun in the evenings. Join our friendly bunch of nerds at Greatwargroup.com.

Excellent. We are at a campsite close to Hay on Wye (see view, not this morning though!). Toby is feeling the miles we walk more than he used to but still willing! Also he still has to put up with our investigation of churches! 😂

Also in St Mary’s Cusop is this headstone, rear and front. Booth basically made Hay on Wye the book selling Centre it is today.
