Pinned
This is one of those pinned introductory posts. I'm Jim. I am a computer scientist by education, and a Unix/Linux system administrator by profession. My better half is Kat and we've been together 20 years as of Dec 2024. The adorable calico cat in my user icon is Lemmy.
I finished book 8 which was Cordwainer Smith's, "Quest of the Three Worlds". This book is one of those classic Sci-Fi books from the 60s. Casher O'Neill is traveling from planet to planet to get weapons to free his planet from the dictator. Weird book, but entertaining.

I finished book 7 which was Lee Hollis's, "Death of a Tom Turkey". This is the 17th book in the Hayley Powell Mystery series. Hayley Powell fancies herself an amateur sleuth. She solves murders. In this case it's Tom Farley, local turkey farmer and someone the whole town hates.

I finished book 6 which was Mike Simpson's, "The Last Dungeon Crawler". This is an urban fantasy novel with Fahlgrim, a 6,000 year old dwarf warrior-cleric, one of several tasked with keeping watch over the human race. This was a great book, and very entertaining to read.

I finished book 5 which was Septimus Brown's (@septimusbrown.com), "We've Come For Your Eggs (and Other Reasons to Annex the North)". This is a brilliant metaphor of the trade wars the idiot US president started with Canada. It's a great book and was a lot of fun to read.

Today is 11 January. That marks 5 months. This has been some of the shortest and at the same time longest 5 months of my entire life.

I finished book 4 which was Agatha Christie's, "The Murder on the Links". This is one of the Hercule Poirot Mystery books. It's a murder mystery and H. Poirot is on the job. Will he solve the mystery? Perhaps. Ok let's be honest here, of course he's going to solve it. It was a good read.

I finished book 3 which was Septimus Brown's (@septimusbrown.com) , "When the Sky Breaks". I read this before as an ARC, but I bought a signed copy from the author and that is what I read. It is a young adult sci-fi, little fantasy, book with a pretty hefty plot twist. Great book.

I finished book 2 which was "MrBallen P:resents: Where Nightmares Live" by mrballen. This is the 2nd graphic novel form of his strange, dark & mysterious stories. It's a good book. My copy is signed. It and the first volume, also signed are a part of my modest signed book collection.

I finished book 1 which was Steve Conley's, "The Middle Age: Volume 3: So Many Questions". This is the 3rd volume compilation of The Middle Age comic. Sir Quimp is a mediocre knight at best and his is controlled by his cursed magic blade Maledicta. Very entertaining comic.

I finished book 42 which was Morgan Robertson's, "The Wreck of the Titan". This was written 14 years before the Titanic sailed. In this book a largest ship in the world, the Titan, called unsinkable, which sailed with insufficient life rafts was lost after hitting an iceberg. Sound familiar?

I read book 41 which was "Chicks 'n Chained Males", a mostly fantasy short story collection edited by Esther Friesner. This is the 3rd book in the Chicks in Chainmail series. These stories, mostly written by female authors focus on lady heroes who kick ass and look good doing so.

I finished book 40 which was Stephen Fisher's, "Sword Beach". This one of the first books I have read that was dedicated to one of the British beaches at Normandy during the D-Day invasion, and this case the book focuses on Sword Beach. This was very well written and very informative.

I finished book 38 which was Esther Friesner's, "Here Be Demons". This was an amusing take on some under skilled demons and their rather unsuccessful attempts to corrupt n innocent soul.

It's been a while since I posted book 37, going off grid to get a heart transplant will do that to you!

Hello Bluesky folks. I mentioned a while back that there was a very good reason for disappearing from here over the summer. I am ready to talk about it. I had a heart transplant! I get to live due to the generosity of the anonymous donor. That is the highlight of a year of absolute hell.

Today was my birthday. For reasons, it is a very important birthday to me. Kat did make the pizza I requested for dinner, it was great and after I asked her about it, she did make me a small cake. That too was great. That's all. Nothing else. Was a very uneventful, but important birthday.

They say heroes save lived. 18 year old Kimber Mills, may she rest in peace, is definitely a hero. It was not by any direct action that she saved lives, but due to a donation of her organs, she has the potential to save several lives. www.wvtm13.com/article/frie...
Friends and family gather at UAB hospital for Kimber Mill's honor walk
Mills leaving a lasting legacy of organ donation.

Hello Bluesky. I wonder how many of you noticed that I have been absent from here for a few months. There is a damn good reason for is and someday I might even give details. For now I will say I had a serious medical condition, potentially fatal, but I now have a new lease on life. (cont'd)

I am losing my damn mind. As part of reading an ARC of a book, I promised to give a fair review of the book. It's a standard deal, here's an free early copy, read it and tell us what you think. I had it in my mind that I never did so. Went to do it tonight and I see I did so on 30 May.

This is from today's military parade. I was going to comment on how much better I and my fellow cadets marched when we were in the Civil Air Patrol 30+ years ago. They are so sloppy and entirely out of step. After reading the comments, that might all been on purpose and if so, well done Army.
I did not edit this, this is the actual parade with the actual music being played.
