Apple on making icons across iOS/macOS/watchOS: "Give your app a consistent identity wherever it shows up"

Also Apple: "Color is no longer a consistent part of your identity"

Remember when Gmail first came out and it was 1GB of free storage?

1 GB??!?!

well here we are maybe ~20 years after I first setup my account and they just emailed me to say I'm at 50% capacity.

So I've got another 20 years before I gotta figure something out lol

This story needed a warning.

Even though I know this kind of stuff is happening every day, I won't sleep tonight.

for a second I thought the footer glyphs were all links to social sites and my first thought was "damn, I am behind on the social game. I know the elephant is mastodon and the bird is twitter, but idk what the rest of these are..."

I'm debating changing my "size" control from a JS-based implementation which swaps out img src values to just generating HTML pages.

While I was prototyping it, I got it working as a link rather than a change of DOM and my view transition just took over and that was pretty cool tbh

Kinda fun to see how icons have changed over time.

Shapes is the obvious one (freeform w/transparency for older Mac icons, now its all squircles)

But colors have changed. More vibrancy with newer icons.

Standup for last night's work on icon comparison page:

- Decided to go with dedicated page for sets of icons
- Got initial page setup
- Added backgrounds for macOS icons (older ones have transparency)

Need to add more meta info & figure out how to access this page via GUI (currently URL only)

A few side-by-sides of how some have changed

(note to self on feature idea: make a page for one of those image diff tools that let's you compare two icons)

I've started pumping the new iOS icons into my gallery — starting with the ones from Apple.

Clearly the "G" in the free mason symbol stands for "grid"

lol AI is so trained on react-router history, that it thinks my import should be from `react-router-dom`, but those imports all changed in v7 to just `react-router`

The only thing I want from Apple Music is for them to bring back what was in the very first music app: configurable bottom tabs.

My entire music collection is stuffed behind a single tab today (“Library”). Would love to go back to artists, albums, and playlists.

Remember the iPod's "1,000 songs in your pocket"?

I think we know where the marketing department is going on OpenAI's rumored hardware...
