I was absolutely honored this weekend to be in the same room as the famous Pylos combate agate and other incredible bronze age artifacts. So so so incredible. Just amazing to spend time with this and see it up close. I'll have to share some of my other favorite things soon, too!

Here's another artifact with writing, also from the Getty Villa. This pottery fragment has an Etruscan word, sutil, meaning 'for the grave'. Writing makes artifacts feel so personal and transports us back into the past in interesting ways. This word spoken by someone that long ago are with us still.

Check out this Greek vase at the Getty Villa. I'm so fascinated when art and artifacts meet writing. Labeled here for us is Hermes, but it has an interesting spelling and declension. Note the rough breathing for /h/, and the ending -ηνος: neither are expected when we're used to Attic forms.
