Sure, there are always jerk reviewers who will overstep their role and their attitude, but in the more appropriate and measured instances, I think approaching a note as "something here lost my audience's attention" is a pretty solid approach.

I've also adapted this in how I've looked at some R&Rs I've received. Peer review is still fundamentally broken, but if I take a breath and realize *something* didn't work here, I think it becomes a better narrative in revision.

I've started adopting this in how I work with my students, particularly my graduate students. As researchers, I don't think we don't view writing papers and articles as storytelling, but that's what it is. And you want to keep your reader immersed in your story.
