But playing on Thursdays doesn't come without some tradeoffs. After all, everything in modern college sports is a negotiation.

What ECU loses at the gate it hopes to gain back in exposure.

A longtime fan shared the perspective below.

Ace doesn't like to be called AJ’s agent. He doesn’t like manager or handler, either. He prefers dad, same as ever.

And the best argument that he's NOT AJ's "agent": Agents don't often discipline their clients like a parent.

Take the anecdote below.

But of the dozens of people I talked to for this story, a good number of them did like Ace's general approach: Keep as much money for AJ — and the family — as possible. Keep the snakes out at all costs.

Take this quote below.

The Pierces aren't totally new to the portal.

Caden's older brother Justin was a grad transfer in the first spring of the portal, back in 2019. A lot has changed, but at least one thing should be the same.

Like that a lot of teams will call.

As I lay out in this video, Pudge’s story is very important for my family and me. College football media doesn’t cover cats enough. Harriet, my orange tabby, thanks Pudge for paving the way.

Also get a load of Pudge's origin story with long snapper George Carlson's family. A real-life E.T. moment on the South Side of Chicago.

An astute reader pointed out that while I am making fun of marketing with a Nissan joke, the Washington Post is advertising the Ford Summer Sales Event.

So who's the joke really on here?

Here's an NCAA statement on the legislation introduced today. It's from Tim Buckley, senior VP of external affair.

(Note: When the NCAA refers to schools now using up to 50 percent of athletic department revenue to pay athletes, it is factoring in scholarships and other benefits).

We also had a draft of that language, which of course could change after it was first circulated last week. The antitrust protections in the draft from the judiciary committee line up with key points of the House settlement terms.

A group of sports editors are talking with leaders of major sports orgs this week, including Charlie Baker. The Post’s @jasonmurray.bsky.social asked Baker what his and the NCAA’s role is in standing up for schools (and therefore athletes) in Donald Trump’s crosshairs.

Baker’s answer:

Threw on the Nationals game out of curiosity. In one standard camera shot, you get ads for Terra (!), HeGetsUs(dot)com and BetMGM.

What a world.

The other day, I walked up to 5-foot-8 guard Spencer Hubbard and told him I was working on this.

"Well then I know why you're talking to me," he said with a laugh, being a good sport.

He was not, however, good at guessing the team's average height.
