Paul Simon’s music remains a touchstone for me: he’s a remarkable songwriter and creator. “Bridge Over Troubled Water” features a sterling performance by Art Garfunkel, and I wish our modern era produced odds to deep friendship like this song.

I’m not fond of local pizza chain Fresh Slice, and their recent window ad in my neighbourhood features some pizzas that look unappetizing (and AI-generated). I also prefer the classic margherita pizza: san marazano tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella, basil, olive oil.

Sometimes in life I’m surprised, I’m whiplashed, I’m the recipient of unexpected information and possible opportunities.

Robert A M Stern was one of the leading postmodern architects; here in BC he designed The Edgewater and Water’s Edge, both in West Vancouver.

It’s a rainy morning in Vancouver as I commute to the office, but it’s always nice to get the “driver’s seat” on the automated SkyTrain where I can look out the front window for the duration of my journey.

I’m reading Haruki Murakami’s most recent novel, The City and its Uncertain Walls. I’ve read every previous Murakami novel translated into English (and 3 of his short story collections).

I can’t imagine the torture & pain that these (and other) hostages and through… may there come a day when no hostages are taken anywhere.
“The last time we saw each other was in the trunk of a car in Gaza.”

Former hostages Rom Braslavski and Sasha Trufanov catching up.

Now they are both free

EJ Hughes painted Entrance to Howe Sound in 1949; it recently sold at auction for nearly $5 million. I like this painting more than some of his later works (he was still working on Vancouver Island when I first lived there): there’s some dense, surreal greenery on display.

I took this picture of Picasso’s Portrait of Fernande Olivier” at the Staedel Museum in Frankfurt in 2018. This 1909 cubist portrait is unmistakably modern & well-executed.

Alvvays , hailing from Prince Edward Island, might be the ultimate modern Power Pop band. They certainly seem to be one of the most critically-acclaimed 🇨🇦 rock bands (a status Arcade Fire used to have).

This week I’m reading Unpacking my Father’s Bookstore by Laurence Roth. The Walter Benjamin reference is (of course) intentional!

UK artist Celia Paul’s art bears the influence of the impressionists but her canvasses are far less crowded. “My Chair”, Celia Paul, 2020.

My paternal grandfather served in the navy in the Pacific Theatre of WW2. My maternal grandfather was in an army sergeant who fought Nazi forces in the “D Day” invasion of Normandy; he was wounded in the knee and suffered PTSD. #RemembranceDay

I took this picture last week about a block from home. I love autumn, and I’d miss the fall rains if they ever ceased to arrive.

I’m currently reading this history of #Antisemitism in the US by Pamela S Nadell. I can already tell that this will be a 5-star read and I recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about this topic. I wonder if a similar book exists for 🇨🇦?

On Monday night we went for dinner at L’Artista in Burnaby. The atmosphere is resolutely “old school” and the food is outstanding Italian comfort fare balanced between pasta options & meat-forward entrees. The owner, who hails from Calabria, was present too.
