Wow, what an inspiring story about your father overcoming such trauma and hardship as a child. You did an excellent job with the video.

I will download the ebook. This must have been such a big project writing this book. Congratulations on bringing it to fruition.

You should definitely make your own Intro to Jewish Genealogy presentation!

I ended up presenting it at my local synagogue when I initially made it, but I really should update it and present it elsewhere.

This thread reminded me... I've made a Intro to Jewish Genealogy presentation and also have a handout with links that I can share with you too, @sopranovox.bsky.social.

It's from a few years ago but it touches on a lot of points @genealogrebecca.bsky.social has made.

I consider Gil Bardige to be one of the best educators when it comes to working with endogamous matches. He is giving a presentation on Monday December 8th, which you can register for here: programs.cjh.org/tickets/fami...

I also have handouts from the 2024 IAJGS conference about JRI Poland and Russian Pale of Settlement records. DM me and I can send them to you if you're interested.

I have a spreadsheet I've kept with information on confirmed DNA matches who all have the issue of endogamy. It gives a sense of what types of matches I've been able to place on my tree.

I'd be happy to share with you a version of it if that would be helpful to you.

For matches > 200 cM, don't worry about endogamy too much. You can use DNAPainter's Shared cM tool.

The issue is for working with matches with < 200 cM. There you just want to look for a match with a longest segment > 20 cM and one other segment > 10 cM. Those are the matches to focus on.

Oh, and I'd also recommend Transkribus: www.transkribus.org

I've found it be super helpful for transcribing documents in Russian cursive script.

Yes, this is indeed up my alley! @genealogrebecca.bsky.social has got many resources covered. I'd just add www.litvaksig.org/all-lithuani... for research in Lithuanian towns.

Happy to help advise on all things #DNA / endogamy related. The key is to filter for high quality matches.
LitvakSIG | All Lithuania Database
The All Lithuania Database (ALD) contains data from original records in a number of languages and alphabets including Old Cyrillic, modern Russian, Yiddish, Hebrew, Lithuanian, Polish and Old German.

Pro Tools is a separate subscription so I imagine it wouldn't be impacted? Just a guess though. #GenHour

Oh wow, that's crazy!

Maybe you should purchase the kit now and just hold onto it until the postage situation improves? #GenHour

Yes, you are a prime candidate because you can start the Ancestry gift subscription up to 90 days in the future. So in essence you can have it start when your subscription ends in mid-January.

You can read more about it here: genealogybargains.com/ancestry-bla...

Ah, that's an important caveat. Good to know.

Is the postage expensive because of tariffs? #GenHour

Yes, I just missed the atmospheric river. Timing worked out great!

It was a great trip. I had long days, but I really enjoyed my time out there. #GenHour

Precisely! It is really special when you connect with relatives who are interested in family history. And it's rare that I find someone like that who is close to my age, 😊.

She is going to help build out more of her family on my Ancestry tree, which is really nice!
