Still really happy about this
Letting you know I bought this a couple weeks ago based on one of your posts, and my 9 yo somewhat-reluctant-reader just started and, unprompted, told me it’s really good, that’s he’s already on chapter 5, and that I should read it too. (And then proceeded to tell me the entire opening :) )
November 23, 2025 at 1:23 AM
And the answer to this is: it depends on how many people read it! I'd love to do one and have definite ideas...so tell your friends, leave reviews on amazon/goodreads/other places, and especially spread the word (like you're doing now) - thank you!!!
“Is there a sequel to this?”

Yes, that was my thought, too (although far more vaguely and inexactly than you put it!) - but glad to hear it echoed...
I would have thought from the kokoshnik-style headdress you see flying off one of the women in the church and from the dresses themselves that they were meant to be regular Russians and look more — to my vastly uneducated eye — like perhaps the Russian Orthodox protestors of 1905.

Hive mind in both Jewish studies and film studies: found this on YouTube, apparently a Pathe movie from 1905 that the site has titled "Russian Antisemitic Atrocities"...
Does anyone know more about this film? The timing would certainly make sense for such a title...

Yes
The actual secret to why I know stuff is that I ask a question any time I don’t understand literally anything. I don’t care how simple it is. Anybody who makes fun of you for asking a simple question likely doesn’t know the answer either

Just watched the 1904 silent horror film the Mistletoe Bough in its BFI restoration, and very much recommend to those interested: it has an energy (aided by the later musical accompaniment, but not only that) that feels subtler than a lot of its contemporaries.

Unsurprisingly smart thread here; best explanation I’ve yet seen for google’s behavior
This is, of course, a fascinating thread from Kate asking why Google is effectively cannibalizing its own market for both digital ads on third party properties and search ads, by effectively taking away the incentive to click through to third party sites. I have a theory as to why they're doing it.
So this ad revenue metric is indicative of such a fascinating and weird set of business decisions by Google to inexplicably kill of SEO-- and I honestly don't get how they think this is going to pay off for them in the long run.

I live in awe of, and in profound gratitude for, the many editors I have worked with, both on my books and articles. Everything I've published is a lot better because of them.
Editors have a really hard job, and the good ones can make something unreadable readable, and the great ones can make something unreadable into something good. But they're basically invisible, until someone tries to write without one.
