It often has the really tiny villages in it, etc, that don't have a communities page.

Also, if you find the petition for naturalization for him, there should be a certificate of landing/certificate of arrival, which will list the exact ship he came on. And you can pull the passenger manifest then, to double-check the town spelling.

Did you check the gazetteer on JewishGen? Also, does the person have known siblings or cousins whose paperwork you can cross-reference?

I 100% understand this dilemma. I've made my peace with the fact that I'll likely never be able to travel somewhere that requires a yellow fever vaccine, because it would be months without my meds to get it.

Every doctor I've ever spoken to has explained that to get a live vaccine, I need to go off the medication that makes me immunocompromised for at least a month before and after the vaccine. And I'm still running a decent risk getting a live vaccine, even with all that.

Prevents infection for all of those above groups*

Herd immunity is awesome, and we need more of it.

This, btw, is why you should get your damn MMR vaccine, if you're not immunocompromised. It prevents people who are pregnant and not vaccinated, people who are children and not vaccinated, and people who are immunocompromised and CAN'T get vaccinated.

You help others by getting it for yourself.

We'll get that next week, when all of a sudden the fire engines drive by at full blast... and it's Santa, driving around the town. 🙃

A lot of these images have people in them, and I think you can refine it by year: digitalcollections.nypl.org/search/index...

It's also a damn good story with a great closing line. 🙂

I LOVE that idea!!

I would like to point out that we're completely ignoring the (additional) countries where her dad's family came from, since we don't celebrate anything cultural from there really. 🤷‍♀️ 5/

That's so frustrating!

100% this, so much! I didn't know you were Saami, which I think is very cool!

I had a great-grandmother who could speak fluent Polish; she refused to speak it once she immigrated to the US because it wasn't her language.

I'm very annoyed by it.

That's great!!! ❤️

New East Prussia, since I can't type. 🙃

And the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, as I was reminded below. We could also throw in the Duchy of Warsaw for fun. 4/

I love that idea. The kid is thinking about it. 😅

And before that, because I'm nothing if not a complete genealogist, they were schutzjuden in Nee East Prussia.

Literally none of these countries represents our culture. /3 #genealogy
December 11, 2025 at 9:36 PM
But when they lived there, those countries didn't exist.

They were citizens of the Russian Empire. And citizens of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. And for a short time, citizens of an independent Poland.

So, which flag goes in the hexagon? 🤷‍♀️

To be fair, she specifically wants the one about the land snails of Lord Howe Island, by this author, which did not come up. 😂

I'm wary of buying it new because of tarrifs.
