Usually somewhere else, reading a book.
Did not open Bluesky this morning expecting to see a poster from my teenage bedroom 😊 Would absolutely read the book.
Working on a new book proposal at the mo...a semi-perilous dungeon-crawl through ‘70s & ‘80s fantasy art in the unreliable company of a wide-eyed teenage wannabe-artist fanboy (me) and a wizened bearded academic (also me). To put you in mind of that era, here's Jimmy Cauty's 1976 classic #Tolkien

🧵 Seeing posts about the Papal conclave is really tiresome. Yes, we know you watched the movie & that, actually, your knowledge of Roman Catholicism is suspect. Worse are the journos ‘predicting’ the next Pope. The self-described ‘Catholic’ ones are far right fundamentalist [1]

What with it being Independent Bookshop Day, a big shout out to @portalbookshop.bsky.social in York. Run by lovely people, stocked with excellent books, and there’s a cafe upstairs. What more could you possibly want 😊 (I don’t get home to York as much as I’d like but this is an essential stop off.)

An excellent and clear-eyed article from Séamus.

They're not "protecting women". They're little servants of patriarchy and fascism that think they've a right to harass and attack anyone who doesn't fit their narrow, conservative view of womanhood and are delusional if they think the same gowls they're doing the legwork for won't come for them next

It’s either the re-kindling of an old hobby or a one-off for another number of years. Fougasse and bread shots from Richard Bertinet’s ‘Dough’. (His YouTube tutorials are excellent.)

Deleted Instagram last Friday. Missed it for a couple of days but that passed. Off to do other common sense things to help get my brain back, like just put the goddamn phone down and go touch some grass.

Not so much Sunday shuffling as staying hunkered down under blankets and moving as little as possible while the wind and rain returns. A big mug of tea, biscuits that my kids didn’t know about (bwah ha ha) and A Sorcerer Comes To Call by T Kingfisher to read.

The Sunday shuffle has featured reading Three Eight One by Aliya Whitely and walking for my stupid mental health to the audio book of Black River Orchard by Chuck Wendig. Autocorrect nearly changed ‘River’ to ‘Ricer’ but that would probably be quite a different story.

The Sunday shuffle has featured many cups of tea, reading The Very Best of Caitlin R Kiernan and then, for balance, listening to Leonard and Hungry Paul by Ronan Hession as I putter around.

Hustled into Mullingar to pick up new reading glasses and then fell into Just Books, where I celebrated my sharper sight by buying The Rose Garden by Maeve Brennan. Fabulous independent book shop 💫📚💫

The small, judgemental queen of this abode has joined me. Yes, yes - I’ll put the phone down now…

This week’s Sunday Shuffle includes baking oatmeal-raisin cookies, reading Standard Deviation by Katherine Heiny (new to me) and listening to The Dance Tree by Kiran Millwood-Hargrave when out walking later. (The Mercies by KM-H was superb - highly recommend.)

The Sunday shuffle started with a strong cuppa, mushrooms on toast and Ancient Sorceries by Algernon Blackwood. Creation Lake by Rachel Kushner on audiobook (read by Kushner) is going to be accompanying any puttering around later. Aiming for total distraction from everything.

Shuffling through Sunday, reading A Fisherman Of The Inland Sea by Ursula K Le Guin.

If in doubt, read Le Guin.

Shuffling into Sunday, unable to deal with a 1-hr clock change. FFS.

Tea, toast and Claimed! by Gertrude Barrows Bennet to read. Cosmic horror/weird fiction - tis the season etc. There will be a nap later because see first sentence above.

Sunday shuffling… tea, leftover birthday cake and listening to the wind start to pick up. Tis the season and all that. Reading Habitat by Caitriona Shine and just finished The Shadow Cabinet by Juno Dawson on audiobook.
