My history of law is very rusty, but I recall one prof telling me the reason why laws exist at all is to pacify the hoi polloi enough that they wouldn't shank the aristocracy wherever they go.

At-will employment also makes leaving work to protest risky. Structurally, we’re set up to discourage the kinds of protests that happen in other places like France.
