Awesome, literally. The men and the little ship beyond them and the white sea, all viewed from a void — just an incredible picture, made under the most brutal conditions…

This is so dead-on that it gave me the exact combo of intense schadenfreude / involuntary pity that I feel when I read real Chotiner.

Yes - at a mosque, six days after 9/11 - “The face of terror is not the true faith of Islam. That's not what Islam is all about. Islam is peace. … those who feel like they can intimidate our fellow citizens don't represent the best of America, they represent the worst of humankind".

Yes. Honestly if you make the mistake of mentioning “I like giraffes” or “I like clocks” then you’ll get those kinds of dish towels and paperweights and T shirts for the rest of your days. Meanwhile, the other popes were smart enough to be “I like Michelangelos.”

Yep my Hungarian grandmother never properly assimilated after coming to Michigan as a refugee in the 1930s. She declined to abide by the major social mores for Midwestern suburban wives and mothers and became the first woman to run her own lab at Upjohn, doing cutting-edge cancer research.

Half the normal amount means no pies, half the fresh fruit and veggies, chicken not turkey, no cranberry sauce, etc. The same volunteers do this every year, it’s well organized, everyone is dedicated and reliable. We hand deliver and each family was so appreciative. The only thing missing is money.

Thanks for this - makes sense. But what’s up with the -1.8%?

Question that source.

He was quite generous and forgiving of the prior explorer dude who mistook a cloud formation for an island and thus fucked up Nansen’s entire land journey.

Glad you shared this. Stealing from EBT cards is a nationwide
problem. States could change cards from strips to chips and end it, so that’s something to advocate for. Until then, individuals can use the Connect app to lock their card when it’s not in use - much more effective than changing PWs.

I did enjoy his petty side too tho. Passing time on the long winter nights by reading aloud to the crew pages of incorrect things other explorers had predicted about the expedition so they could all laugh and laugh.
November 17, 2025 at 10:48 PM
SO chill. And the food! Cloudberry soufflés! The crew gaining so much weight while MAROONED IN THE ARCTIC that they had to go on diets! So healthy that the doctor got bored and started tending the dogs! The windmill = electric light all winter! After Shackleton’s South, it was quite a read.

YES!! He got the Nobel Peace Prize for establishing the first international refugee agency,
part of the League of Nations, after World War 1. Spent the last 10 years of his life doing that work.

I followed @swordsjew.bsky.social’s lead and have been reading first person accounts by early Arctic explorers. (Part of me is now always living in a beautiful icy void.) All the accounts are great/insane in their own way but this is my fave.

It’s horrifying - but also important to note the article is from December 2020.

I remember once just including the phrase “grocery shopping” in a sentence with a dad-colleague and he just instantly was like “NeverShopHungry” and “MarketBasket,” pure speed and reflex, like fielding a line drive.

One of the major ongoing disputes my wife and I have had is whether to raise our daughter pronouncing it as scone or scone.

Having your psyche casually dissected by JCO, tweet by tweet, just when she feels like it, on your own platform in front of millions of your followers — true nightmare material.

Shutdown was over Inflation Reduction Act ACA marketplace tax credits, which will expire in Dec. The credits are for people who buy their own insurance (aren’t on Medicaid, don’t have employer insurance, usually moderate income). Separately, OBBA slashes Medicaid. Shutdown focused on IRA credits.

I’ve been thinking the same. One of the only mainstream media op-eds that I’ve seen on this angle - explicit calllouts of white supremacy, racist fantasies, racial hatred - is this WSJ piece. (The editor gave it a headline that references only antisemitism tho.)

Opinion | The MAGA Right’s Antisemitism Problem
By failing to draw a clear line, JD Vance and the Heritage Foundation put conservatism in jeopardy.
