I have heard rumors too. Specifically that he was a flosser, while claiming to catch sockeye on his nymph pattern. Pretty much all sockeye “fly fishing” is really just flossing. That’s why most “sockeye salmon fly patterns” are the most simply adorned hooks that can legally be called a fly.

When I want to make fly fishing easier: soft hackles with a tenkara rod. When I want to just chill out and fish: swinging flies with a two hander.

Jim Teeny used his Teeny Nymph to catch tons of trout, salmon, and steelhead. I would imagine adding a soft hackle would make it even more effective.

But the new one is so active I’m going to keep feeding it! Maybe convert to a rye starter.

Turns out the old starter was ok, I had been feeding it whole wheat flour to revive it after a long fridge stay. Turns out that had gone bad and was the source of the off smell.
The much neglected old starter discard in the fridge was all I needed to get it going again with fresh flour.

Woolly buggers, small clousers, leech patterns. If crappie are present you’ll likely catch those as well.
