I didn't either. I kind of wish I could, but even if I had the money I'd still hesitate because I don't think it's nearly as well done as it should be. I really just want the minifigs and the shuttle.

Possibly something like a barrel hinge? That way you get to see the mechanism when it's deployed, but the pivoting parts retract inside their housing so it looks flush when tucked away.
