These days I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a stunt that was planned from the jump.

Possibly

I have a much more cynical take, which is that the process of becoming a university leader at the highest levels is one that rewards people for mostly not making any big mistakes, rather than for having a bold vision.

Nah she’ll go straight to the right-wing speaker circuit. Look for her to be a regular guest on CNN in five years.

This is essentially all out war on higher ed/research. From lawsuits, to science budgets, to F&A rates, to taxes on endowments, to politicizing grant awards, to reclaiming patents, on and on.

Some institutions are just trying to pick their battles, and simply not choosing well.

Yeah, cute. Easy to score points when you’re distorting someone else’s opinion:

@assignedmedia.org is another doing absolutely crucial work thanks to @evanurquhart.bsky.social and all those that contribute. Make sure you’re supporting them and in doing so, you are making a difference for folks who have been marginalized by our current media ecosystem for too long. No more.

I stopped watching cable news altogether years ago. There’s very little of value you can’t find elsewhere.

All I was really trying to convey (perhaps not very well) last night.

We haven’t even gone to court yet and have had to cut budgets by 20%. The reality of current funding, even in the best conditions, is pretty grim.

She is on the show to induce fights, because the underlying assumption is that fights means more eyeballs.
November 29, 2025 at 3:38 PM
Of course. Which is why I prefer to make arguments based on evidence.
November 29, 2025 at 4:24 AM
Frankly the only point I was trying to make is that it’s very unlikely these decisions are being made because the administrators are secret Trump fans. But… people here love to argue.

Not the argument I’m making pal, but enjoy the jokes.

Step it up, Dan, come on now. Fucking A man.
November 29, 2025 at 3:38 AM
There is no point in watching CNN. They want these kind of fights because they’ve decided they translate into increased viewership. We’re all worse off for it.

I have a lot of respect for Harry Bienen. He was NU’s President when I was a doctoral student there in the late nineties, and he and my advisor knew each other well. I don’t view him as some kind of stooge for the board, but we’ll see.
