As an example of how we are building on top of Gemini 3, AI Mode in Search now uses Gemini 3 to enable new generative UI experiences, all generated completely on the fly based on your query. Here’s how you might use this to learn a complex topic like how RNA polymerase works.

Ah, yes that’s a problem that needs to be fixed. Faculty exploiting cheap skilled labor under the auspices of candidates being required to publish in high impact journals to fulfill their graduate studies is wrong and departments should course correct.

How many yrs are you assuming it takes to complete a PhD? If it’s over 5, you’re pitting one problem (lack of job readiness) against another (unnecessarily long PhDs). Otherwise, it’s likely <1 year additional time to complete coursework by the time of defense; it also reduces post-doc time.

A second degree isn’t for pursuing research faculty positions, which have their own structural problems. Rather, it is for broadening a candidate’s opportunities as they pursue getting a job outside of academia.

Yeah, PhD candidates should be directed and supported to seek a second degree (e.g., MBA, MPA/H, RN, JD, etc.) depending upon availability at their institution. I don’t know the number, but 1 faculty member is easily producing 5+ PhDs during their career, which results in the glut you describe.

lol, our grocery store music seems to be controlled by whichever generation is predominantly working a shift. It’s been oldies, classic rock, country, or EDM depending on time of day that I shop.

On related note, this is happening in Bay Area now.
