## Best Coffee Roasters in the Northeast
The Northeast can be cold, blustery, and fast-paced. It’s also one of the longest settled regions in modern America. The Northeast is made up of beautiful scenery, historic buildings, and bonafide coffee lovers. There’s nothing better than a micro-roasted cup of coffee while watching the snowfall in the beautiful settings New England has to offer.
Here are the best coffee roasters in the Northeast.
### Maine – Tandem Coffee Roasters
Located in Portland’s Bayside hip neighborhood, the husband and wife team, Kathleen and Will Pratt, opened Tandem Coffee Roasters. The duo shares their love of single-origin roasted coffee and bakery treats. Tandem Coffee Roasters opened in 2012. And 2 years later, they opened Tandem Coffee + Bakery in a restored vintage gas station.
Tandem’s in-house bakery queen, Briana Holot, is an experienced baker who has worked at New York City bakeries like Pies and Thighs and M. Wells. Briana is a recent James Beard nominee. She brings her baking talents to the coffee shop and roaster.
Tandem roasts single-origin coffee and seasonal blends. When they’re not under quarantine, they offer coffee tastings and tours of their roasting operations.
### Vermont – Vermont Coffee Company
Vermont Coffee Company wants to be your friend. Their staff wears the word friend on all their shirts, and it’s on their merchandise. I like it.
Vermont Coffee Company is located in Middlebury, VT. The roaster is one of the bigger companies on this list. But they’ve got their operation down to a friendly science.
They roast organic, fair trade coffee beans with 100% renewable energy sources. The coffee roasted by Vermont Coffee company is some of the best on the East Coast. They started using renewable energy in their entire facility in 2018.
The good vibes don’t stop with their environmental policies. Vermont Coffee Company is heavily involved in the local community. They contributed to food disparities in the Middlebury area and opened a community theater in the same neighborhood as their roasting facility.
The slogan for Vermont Coffee Company is “Coffee Roasted for Friends”. If you can’t make it to their location, you can order various roasts and beans directly from their website.
### New Hampshire – Flight Coffee Co.
Claudia Barret founded Flight Coffee Co. in Bedford, NH. Barret has grown her passion for quality, fair trade, damn good coffee to a social-minded organization. Flight Coffee Co. spends many resources ensuring their farmers are paid a fair wage for their product and bringing that humanity into their roasts.
Flight Coffee Co has a roasting facility and coffee shop located in the same building. You can buy their coffee all over the East Coast and sign up for their monthly coffee membership to receive their award-winning coffee delivered to your doorstep.
Flight Coffee Co. staff is continually learning and attending classes on the newest coffee sciences, and you can see that throughout the company. On their website, they have detailed brew instructions for the consumer.
### Massachusetts – Barismo Coffee Roasters
Barismo Coffee Roasters is the brainchild of a group of friends who worked in the coffee world as baristas. Who knows coffee better than baristas? They started blogging in 2006 as a group to share their coffee tastings, work experiences, and coffee dreams.
Their coffee dreams came true in 2008 when they opened their first coffee roasting location in Arlington, MA. And they now have 3 booming locations, a coffee subscription program, and a large wholesale arm.
You can see their passion for expertly roasted coffees when browsing their site. They have brewing guides, a clear layout of their transparent buying practices, and a tangible passion for what they do, roast coffee.
They have spearheaded coffee cupping competitions and tastings in the Greater Boston area. And, they offer 3 in-person coffee shops, sell to local and national retailers, and my favorite, their coffee subscription.
If you ever needed a primer on how to brew, let’s say cold brew, they’ve got easy to follow brew guide for an excellent cold brew with a cheat sheet. I get the vibe from their site that they want great coffee to be demystified and understood by everyone.
### Rhode Island – New Harvest Coffee Roasters
Founded in 2000 by Rik Kleinfeldt and Paula Anderson, New Harvest Coffee Roasters in Rhode Island’s best coffee roaster. Located in Pawtucket, RI, they spend 1000s of hours sourcing, roasting, grinding, brewing, and shipping out the best coffee that Rhode Island has to offer.
Like most good roasters, the company has a transparent buying policy to support the farmers they source from. They also have an extensive library of online coffee brewing tips and even bring their expertise to other coffee shops for training sessions.
If you can’t make it to Pawtucket, make sure to check out their online store and coffee subscription services. They donate a portion of the profits from their roast, Sojo MoJoe, to a local women’s shelter in the Pawtucket area.
### Connecticut – J. René
Located in West Hartford, CT, J. René is the epitome of attention to detail and elegance that coffee roasting can be. José René Martínez Onofre claims he has loved coffee since before he could walk. The roasting room and coffee shop have received many awards and 5-star reviews since its opening in 2012.
The roasting room exhibits René’s love of sourcing sustainable coffee from farmers. As a result, those farmer relations are a pillar of the company’s core values. They offer coffee to locals as well as online subscriptions. The coffee shop is a social meeting spot as much as it is a part of the West Hartford community.
J. René’s newest venture is VICTUS Coffee. Victus Coffee is great coffee that fuels great causes. They donate $2 from each bag and coffee subscription to great causes that promote wellness, both locally and globally. These causes range from FoodShare in Connecticut which fights hunger through food banks, food drives, and other volunteer efforts, to Team Africa Rising who are working to develop cycling skills in young boys and girls throughout Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and Benin.
The Mid-Atlantic Region is a diverse area. It encompasses New York all the way to the Virginias. There is a lot of varying cultures, American history, and even more love for coffee. I’m going to look at the best coffee roaster in each state of the Mid-Atlantic region.
I lived in the Philadelphia area from early childhood through middle school. I had my first latte in 8th grade at a small coffee shop I can’t remember the name of now. What I do remember is how rich the coffee culture is in this area.
### New York – Gimme! Coffee
Gimme! Coffee first opened its doors in a tiny roasting space in Ithaca, NY, in 2000. In the 20 years since, it has blossomed into 5 cafe locations, including its main roasting facility. The company’s mission is:
* To find beautiful coffee, to reveal it in the roast, and prove it in the cup.
* To be knowledgeable and consummate hosts, thereby attracting and connecting people.
* And, to grow strong as a business by balancing nature, people, and profits.
Since their explosive growth, they could’ve let these things fall to the wayside, but they’ve stuck to their core values. They continue to grow and build their fundraising and community giving goals.
Gimme! Coffee offers online purchasing and has an extensive wholesale network. They also offer a full learning catalog on their site to make good coffee brewing techniques accessible to every home coffee brewer.
One of their newest locations is at Cornell University in the Bill and Melinda Gates Hall. I’m guessing the Cornell students keep them busy with their late-night studying sessions. If you can’t make it to the Cornell location, you can find their other 4 locations around Ithaca and Trumansburg, NY, or have their full line of roasts delivered to your home.
### New Jersey – modcup
modcup was founded in 2013 by 2 friends, Travis and Mike, in February of 2013. In May of that same year, their partner, Justin, joined the company to really kick start their dreams. Since their humble beginnings in a hot dog stand in Hoboken, NJ, they’ve expanded to 3 cafes, afood truck, and a 2,000 square foot roasting facility with an attached cafe.
Though they’ve grown exponentially since their beginnings, they haven’t lost sight of their core values. They follow these 3 concepts since the birth of modcup:
1. Coffee is a perishable product – once roasted, you have a short window to grind brew and consume it if you want to taste its true flavor complexity.
**modcup refuses to sell any coffee 18 days after its roast date.**
2. Coffee is one of the most complex fruits on the planet – it has the potential to display double the flavor complexity of the wine.
**modcup refuses to go the dark side – over roasting kills complexity and natural flavor – there are categorically no dark roasts in the mod world**
3. Coffee like music, should be fun! Pretentious coffee like pretentious music should be avoided at all costs.
**modcup likes it coffee like it likes its music full of soul; capable of energizing one’s spirit and curiosity**
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, they’ve introduced a new concept, Instant Karma. They sell instant coffee satchels for on the go use. They’ll ship 1 to a nurse or front line worker in their database for every one sold.
You can sign up for their subscriptions, buy bags of their coffee, or even branded apparel or accessories through their beautiful website. Their 3 cafes and truck can be found around Jersey City, NJ.
### Pennsylvania – Square One Coffee Roasters (SQ1)
Square One Coffee Roasters, in Lancaster, PA, is a family-owned roaster and coffee shop. They have won multiple awards, including the esteemed Good Foods Awards for 5 years. The staff takes the craft of small-batch roasted coffee to heart, and it shows in their final product.
The company’s motto is “Do Good Work.” This philosophy is applied to every aspect of the business. The SQ1 team cultivates farmer relations by paying top dollar for their beans. This is higher than the fair trade standard. They value their employees, and it shows in their coffees.
Their cold brew has a cult following because of the care and time put into the coveted cold coffee drink. They also offer a wide range of roasts and blends. If you’re looking for a great gift for the coffee lover that’s hard to shop for, check out their merch (they have an adult coloring book) or their coffee subscription boxes.
The SQ1 team has curated a beautiful company that believes that doing good work makes great coffee.
### Delaware – Little Goat Coffee Roasting Co.
Delaware is a little state but has a big coffee scene. I had to do some digging to find the best coffee roaster in Delaware because there were so many. Enter Little Goat Coffee Roasting Co. They’re located in Newark, Delaware.
The company started with a mission to bring organic, fair trade coffee to the tiny state with big coffee dreams. They proudly display their roaster in their cafe for all visitors to see. Little Goat shows that roasting is their passion. Their roaster is almost part of the staff. Make sure and read about its interesting story on their site.
Little Goat offers online buyers various roasts (including 9 single origin coffees and 3 samplers Boxes). You can also score one of their t-shirts to show your love of the company. All their label art is reminiscent of graffiti art that is so beautifully displayed across the city.
### Maryland – Ceremony Coffee Roasters
If you’re a big fan of the coffee aesthetic, then Ceremony is the coffee roaster for you. Their 7 coffee shops and their roastery are beautifully designed to express their company mission of “coffee should be something special.” Their coffee and cafea are all around Maryland and well-loved by the state’s residents.
Ceremony offers wholesale, in-person, and subscription services. Something unique about the subscription service at Ceremony Coffe Roasters is that you can build your own. This is a great option because not everyone will love all the roasts included in a specific box.
What caught my eye was the different grind options on their beans for shipping. This is pretty unique and an extra personalization that I haven’t seen at a lot of roasters. They offer 8 different grinds, including whole bean, Aeropress, and cold brew.
The company has also done some outstanding work in support of frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their Anne Arundel Medical Center roast donates $10.00 for every bag sold to fresh coffee for medical workers in Annapolis hospitals.
The company’s commitment to fair trade, racial equality, and employee support instantly feels good when you buy a bag of coffee from them. But the product alone speaks for its self. Their coffee has won multiple awards since opening in 2002.
I know that the next time I find myself in the area, I will be dropping in to try their coffee. In the meantime, I will be ordering a build your own box.
### District of Columbia (DC) – Grace Street Coffee
DC is high energy. I think that’s a given. It’s a city (federal district to be exact) that is always moving. Its politics and size demand good coffee. Grace Street Coffee has that covered. The independently owned coffee shop and roaster are located in the historic Georgetown neighborhood.
You can order your whole beans, hot coffee, or prepackaged cold brew ahead of time for pick up. They don’t offer shipping for their cold brew right now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they added it soon.
The cafe is calm and relaxing, which I think is much needed in the hustle and bustle of hectic DC life. The plant wall is to die for. I called a friend of mine who works for a DC non-profit and asked if they had been. They resoundingly said, “Yes! You have to come to visit just to have the flat white!”. I assured them I would as soon and our daughter is a bit older.
If you’re lucky enough to live in DC, go check them out. I would love to hear your feedback.
### Virginia – Cervantes Coffee Roasters
Marialy Justiniano is a native Bolivian who has coffee in her heritage. She is the master roaster and owner of Cervantes Coffee Roasters in Springfield, VA. Marialy grew up around the coffee industry in her native country.
After working in small business, literacy, and small farmer education, Marialy moved to the next logical step of opening a small coffee roaster. She and her staff take pride in their farmer relations, knowledge of a great roasting technique, and bring you the best cup of coffee in Virginia.
You can read about everything Cervantes and coffee on the learning section of their website. They offer in-person and virtual classes on everything from coffee roasting basics to the importance of understanding where your coffee comes from.
But what I was drawn to was their cold brew specific blend that you can have shipped to your house. This is another sign that the cold brew market is strong and here to stay. (Takes a sip of cold brew).
### West Virginia – The Black Dog Coffee Company
What happens when you start roasting coffee at your home simply because you love coffee? You have all your friends tell you to start your own coffee company. That’s exactly what Brian Bircher of Shannahdoah Junction, West Virginia, did.
Brian and his wife, Jennifer Maghan, met while Brian was delivering the roasted beans for his fledgling roasting company, Black Dog Coffee Company. The name of the brand comes from Brian’s beloved black lab, Bear. Bear has passed, but his name legacy is carried on through the coffee and his predecessor, Java, another black lab.
The coffee that Brain and Jennifer sell is roasted in an antique roaster nicknamed “Plutonius.” Brain first set eyes on this roaster when he was still living in Virginia and getting into home roasting. The machine was built in 1931 and one of the longest functioning coffee roasters in the United States.
Black Dog Coffee Company sells various roasts and other items like chocolate and tea on their site. They deliver throughout the US.
## Best Southeast Coffee Roasters
When most people think of the southern United States, they think of sweet tea and biscuits. There is so much more to these southern states than the trivial southern cuisine. The South Eastern United States has some of the best coffee roasters. Let’s take a look at the best roasters in the South Eastern United States.
### Tennesee – Vienna Coffee Company
Located in Maryville, Tn. Maryville is home to Vienna Coffee Company. The company started in Florida and eventually moved to the suburb of Knoxville. What started as a hobby has blossomed into a booming coffee roaster.
Most would think that Nashville would be the coffee hot spot for the state of Tennesse, but it’s located at the base of the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Vienna still has its main roasting facility in Maryville and has blossomed into multiple retail locations.
Their site has 52 coffee roasts and blends available for sale. But here’s the cool part. They have a cold brew specialist that only does cold brew. I’m impressed.
You can order their coffee (or coffees) for delivery anywhere in the US.
### Kentucky – Sunergos Coffee
Sunergos Coffee was established in 2000 by 2 friends, Brain, and Matthew. Sunergos is a Greek word meaning “working together.” This collaborative approach has made an impact on the coffee scene in Louisville, KY. Louisville is considered the craft coffee capital of the South. And for a good reason. Sunergos won the prestigious “Best Espresso” award at Coffee Fest in 2014.
The company has 4 locations, including a 1,200 square foot roastery at their original location. Visitors can watch the roasters in action as they sip hand-crafted (award-winning) espresso and coffee drinks.
The logo is a doodle by Brain that has grown into its well-known mark for great coffee. Sunergos sells their seasonal roasts, foundational roasts, subscriptions, and even their cold brew concentrate online to coffee lovers around the United States.
The company keeps its original mission of good, affordable coffee with a team effort true through its growth. I’m ordering a box of the cold brew concentrate, be right back.
### North Carolina – Counter Culture
Counter Culture is one of the oldest and biggest roasters on this list. Started by 2 friends, Brett and Fred, in 1995 while Brett was in business school at the University of North Carolina. Counter Culture is the industry leader in sustainable and fair trade practices within the United States coffee community.
Counter Culture was the first organic certified roasters in North Carolina. They’ve gone on to open training and roasting facilities across the country. They take their craft, sustainability practices, and ethical sourcing, and employment to heart.
These core values are so ingrained in the company that it has opened 14 training centers to train baristas, customers, and wholesale partnerships on the importance of their values and how to brew their world-class beans. Counter Culture opened an additional roasting facility in the San Franciso Bay area in 2015 to meet their West Coast partners’ needs.
You can purchase all of their roasts and subscriptions on the Counter Culture website. You can also sign up for virtual classes on topics like cold brew, cupping, and other coffee tasting skills.
### South Carolina – Coastal Coffee Roasters
Located in Summerville, NC, Coastal Coffee Roasters brings craft roasted coffee to the Low Country. Family owned and operated, their simple mission is to provide coffee that’s roasted with passion.
You can buy their bagged coffee online, and each bag is produced on an as-needed basis to ensure the freshness and quality the roaster is known for. Make sure to check out their brewing equipment, too, to add to your arsenal of home brewing accessories.
The family wanted to share their love of small-batch roasted coffee with their community, so they opened Coastal Coffee Roasters. The small roastery was a big hit. They can be found roasting 7 days a week at their location along with their cafe with a full menu of yummy treats to enjoy with a latte.
You can order from their menu of select coffees to have delivered to your house. This small roaster offers a variety of sized bags and grinds to meet your personal coffee brewing needs.
### Georgia – East Pole Coffee
East Pole Coffee, located in Atlanta, is Georgia’s best coffee roaster. They’ve been named as the best roaster in the state by many publications, including Food and Wine Magazine.
Founded by 3 friends, Jared Karr, Matt Chesla, and Jules Tompkins in 2015 with the mission to “Let’s serve Atlanta well”. They keep meeting that challenge and staying at the top of the local best-of lists.
The name East Pole comes from Jared’s travels to Indonesia, which he likes to refer to as the “east Pole”. I like it.
The company also roasts its beans as well as has a retail location, online sales, and even a coffee subscription club.
What I found really interesting is the attention to detail in communicating the producer, location, and the processing of each roast on their site.
I’m looking forward to trying their Ibisi Mountain roast.
### Florida – Panther Coffee
When the husband and wife team met at a coffee convention in Minneapolis, they never dreamed they’d own Florida’s best coffee roaster. The duo was visiting the Miami area on a trip and realized while the Cuban-style coffee scene was booming, the city was seriously lacking specialty coffee. Panther Coffee was born.
The coffee shop and roastery has blossomed into 4 retail locations and a wholesale center that houses their roaster. Panther coffee has won multiple industry awards for its coffee and prides itself on its coffee being a beneficial transaction for all. This includes the farmers, the staff, and customers.
You can buy their coffee online for delivery. They offer a lot of options, including cold brew. Make sure and check out the story of their roasts. They are so tuned in to their sourcing that they list the name of each farmer. Pretty cool that it’s on that personal of a level.
## Best Southern Coffee Roasters
The Southern US has one of the best craft coffee scenes you’ve never heard of. They range from hipster roasters that could slaughter any design agency with their packaging to Cajun throwbacks that sit comfortably in mixing Southern history and modern coffee roasting. You’ll be surprised what these states have to offer
### Arkansas – Onyx Coffee Lab
Onyx Coffee Lab’s motto is “Never Settle for Good Enough.” I had to read that twice. This motto speaks to everything that drives Onyx Coffee Lab. The company has extensive training, cupping, and a stunning design experience.
The brand seems like something that should be based out of Brooklyn or San Fransisco, but no. The headquarters are in Rogers, AR. They also have 3 retail locations and ship nationwide. Onyx also offers virtual coffee classes on topics like espresso and milk drinks and latte art.
The brand’s packaging is as breathtaking as their coffee is. They have built a following, and their full store shows that the following is strong.
One of their team memebers, Andrea Allen, has won the barista of the year award for 3 years running. Andrea is the head of Onyx Academy, the educational arm of the company.
The company has many other side businesses as well. They have a creamery, multiple lounges, and groundbreaking projects that include the importance of the chain of command in coffee, and its importance starts with the farmer and ends with the coffee drinker.
Onyx has a robust online store that offers just about everything a coffee drinker could dream of. You can order their full line of roasts for nationwide delivery. When ordering, you can choose your grind and bag size.
The roasting facility uses solar power to run its roasters. Onyx Coffee Labs has an extensive sustainability program, as well.
### Missouri – Oddly Correct
What do you do when you work for corporate America as a coffee buyer but your punk rock to your core? You open your own coffee roasting company in Kansas City, MO. Owner of Oddly Correct, Gregory Kolsto, left his job with Krispy Cream and worked with local small-batch roasters before opening his own shop in 2011.
Oddly Correct doesn’t do sugary, fancy half-caff, 200 degrees, light foam lattes. They don’t even have syrup. What they do is fantastic coffee. They keep it basic so that you can enjoy coffee at its basic flavors. Gregory wanted to throw out the elitist approach to coffee that has taken hold of American coffee shops.
The roastery and cafe are located in the revamped downtown Kansas City area. The coffee tasting room is 3 doors down from the roastery. If you’re looking for a quick latte on your way to work, this isn’t going to be the place for you. The Oddly Correct crew takes pride in their roasts and the time required to make a good cup of espresso.
You can order their coffee online for delivery or pick it up at their store. You can also order to-go mugs, apparel, and even pour over setups. They also offer wholesale coffee for business in Missouri and around the country.
One of their core values is the ethical treatment of all people in their supply chain and staff. This roaster employs only 10 people, but they are looking to change how the coffee industry treats their employees and supply chain.
### Mississippi – Beanfruit
Beanfruit’s founder and owner, Paul Bonds, didn’t even like coffee growing up in Mississippi. He would make his dad instant coffee and was repulsed by it. Folger’s was considered the “good stuff” in his childhood community. He tried specialty coffee drinks in college for the caffeine while in college. It wasn’t until he went to his first cupping years later that he fell in love with coffee. He fell hard.
He started roasting at home and burned 100s of pounds of beans in the process. Once he perfected his roasting skills, he started selling his home-roasted coffee at the local farmer’s market in Jackson, Mississippi. Paul created quite a following and started some wholesale accounts the roaster still has today.
Beanfruit’s name is a tribute to the most basic part of coffee, the bean. The company carries this value throughout its business. They privately source their beans and believe in strong supplier relations.
Beanfruit can be found in many local restaurants and coffee shops and the local Whole Foods. If you don’t live in the Jackson area, you can order their coffee online.
### Alabama – Prevail Coffee Roasters
#togetherweprovail is the driving force behind the craft coffee roaster, Prevail Coffee Roasters. Opened in 2013, Megan and Wade Peterson have made a mark on the Southern US for their coffee and the community-based business that they own.
Located in Auburn, Prevail is the city’s own craft coffee roaster and cafe. They bring community-minded values to their location, supplier relationships, and their customers.
You can buy their coffee online for delivery across the US. When you place your order by 5 pm on Monday, they roast and package on Tuesday and ship to you on Wednesday to ensure the freshest coffee in your order.
Their coffee names are fun Southern-inspired brands like “Bootlegger” and “Farmer’s Daughter.” They seem to have struck gold with the mixing of Southern charm and craft coffee with a conscious. They also sell coffee accessories to round out your needs.
### Louisiana – Rêve Coffee Roasters
Rêve Coffee Roasters is the brainchild of Nathanael Johnson. He started with a coffee shop in Eunice, LA, and soon realized that there is much more to a good cup of coffee than water and some coffee beans. Rêve means “dream” in French. Johnson’s mission is to connect to his community and hear their dreams.
What started as a want to bring a community space for good coffee has grown into 5 locations throughout Southern Louisiana. If you can’t make the trip to the Bayou State, you can order their coffee online. They roast single-origin and original in house blends that have a Louisiana flair to the names.
Try out the L’Acadie blend for a taste of the roastery’s strong Cajun heritage and something unique. The French influences in the brand are apparent in-person and online. You’re transported to a slower, gentler time with a modern twist.
Rêve Coffee Roasters also offer brewing accessories and brewing techniques so that you can have that perfect cup at home. If you live in Louisiana but not near one of their locations, keep an eye for their beans at your local Whole Foods Market.
## Best Southwestern Coffee Roasters
The Southwest region of the US is an interesting amalgamation of a lot of different cultures. Texas alone has 5 distinct areas that could be their own states. Arizona and New Mexico conjure visions of desert landscapes and the Wild West. Then there’s Oklahoma. What does any non-Oklahoman even know about the Sooner States? What’s a Sooner? This region has a robust coffee culture that may surprise you.
### Texas – Merit Coffee Co.
Texas is a big state. I know because I live here. If you’re not familiar, then let me give you an example. I live in North Texas. If I want to go to the beach, it’s a 5-9 hour drive depending on what part of the Texas coast I want to visit. That being said, it was a hard choice to narrow down the best coffee roaster in a state of 29 million people and almost 300,000 square miles. But I did it, just for you. You’re welcome.
Merit Coffee started 7 years ago on the Southside of San Antonio. The company is “obsessed with the science behind a good cup of coffee.” They personally travel to Central and South America and Asia to source their beans directly from the farmers. This commitment to an excellent cup of coffee has won the hearts of Texans.
Merit now operates 10 cafes throughout Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas. Their roasting operations base is still in that old converted warehouse, but they’ve set their sights on conquering Texas as the best craft coffee roaster in Texas.
You can order their coffee from their site for delivery. They offer a select variety of their single-origin roasts and blends. If you need any brew gear, they have that too. Can’t be bothered with placing an order every month? Sign up for their coffee subscription service and never worry about running out of coffee again.
### Oklahoma – Elemental Coffee
Elemental Coffee’s mission is just that- keep the basic elements of the natural bean. They are a craft roaster and cafe in Oklahoma City that emphasizes the base flavors without tweaking the taste with added flavors or processing.
They are famous for saying a roast may taste this way today and might be different the next. If you’re looking for a craft roaster that keeps it real to the beans’ natural roasted flavor, then you’ve found it here at Elemental.
You can order their single-origin and blends online. Make sure to check out the killer deal they have on bottled house cold brew.
### New Mexico – Cutbow Coffee
Located in the capital of New Mexico, Albuquerque, Cutbow coffee is considered the best coffee roaster in the state. The founder and owner, Paul Gallos, spent 25 years perfecting the craft of artisan roasted coffee. Paul worked for Pete’s Coffee as their head roaster.
When Paul left his position with Pete’s in San Fransico, he moved back to his home town to open Cutbow Coffee. The name comes from the local hybrid trout that is found in New Mexico’s rivers. The fly fishing theme found in the Cutbow brand and coffee shop is a tribute to Paul’s late father that loved fishing. A portion of their proceeds goes to the Hermit’s Peak Watershed Alliance. The non-profit works to protect the rivers Paul’s father adored so much.
You can buy their full line of roasts online for delivery. Their shop offers multiple different grinds to ensure you’ll have the right beans for your brewing method. I’m especially looking forward to trying their limited edition aged Sumatra beans.
### Arizona – Cartel Coffee Lab
When husband and wife team, Jason and Amy Silberschlag, started their tiny coffee street cart business in 2008, they had big dreams. Enter Cartel Coffee Lab. What is now considered the gold standard for artisan craft roasted coffee in the US calls Arizona home.
The small street cart business model has been so successful that they now have 10 locations, including cafes in Palm Springs and Austin. When I was researching this coffee roaster, one journalist from Pheonix said, “If you haven’t heard of Cartel Coffee Lab, then you’ve been living under a Starbucks shaped rock.” I just about died when I read that because a. shots fired, and b. it’s true.
As a Native Texan, I have had the pleasure of imbibing in Cartel’s exquisite coffee. Their most popular roast is the Black Market Blend Forty Eight. This medium body blend is easy on the palate but will still satisfy dark roast lovers like me.
Their site has an extensive knowledge base for you to learn about their different roasts, their supply chain, and best brew methods. You can also order their full line of craft roasted coffees for delivery.
Vogue, Alton Brown, and Food and Wine Magazine have given this coffee roaster with humble beginnings rave reviews.
## Best Pacific Coffee Roasters
The West Coast of the United States covers a lot of geography. The Pacific region also includes Alaska and Hawaii, our most distant states. There’s a lot to cover in this region, including the Pacific North West’s Coffee Meca. After all, Starbucks is from Seattle. We owe “Bucks” for bringing craft, specialty coffee mainstream. There’s even a Starbucks in the tiny town my grandparents live in. There’s not a stoplight, but, dang it, there’s a Starbucks. I digress. Let’s jump in!
### California – Four Barrel Coffee
It should come as no surprise that California is home to the iced coffee craze that has America (the world?) in its grips. That being said, California has some outstanding roasters, which made this pick especially hard. California is also our most populous state and 3rd largest, land wise.
Mark Twain once said, “The coldest winter I’ve ever spent was Summer in San Fransico.” In my experience, this is true. Hot, craft roasted coffee is just the thing to cure a chill in the air in JUNE. Four Barrel Coffee is based in San Fransico, where coffee is almost as important as the tech industry.
Four Barrel Coffee has a full roasting catalog that has won multiple awards and a loyal following. And the company is an employee owned co-op which is cool because the employees drive the culture. I like it.
You can order their specialty roasted coffee online for home delivery in the US. They have an interesting approach for visitors to their online store. They treat it almost like wine. And, they have everything categorized by intended flavor. I’m looking forward to placing an order next week. If your place your order by noon, they ship out that day’s roast the same day.
Did I mention that they use an antique German roaster that delivers robust flavors and is hard to replicate? After years of traveling the world and researching beans and roasters, they have some of the country’s best products.
If you do find yourself in the Bay Area, make sure to check out one of their 3 coffee shops.
### Nevada – Hub Coffee Roasters
What started as a simple home roasting family dream has turned into the best coffee roaster in Nevada. Mark Trujillo and his adult children wanted to open the first coffee roaster in Reno, NV, with the 2 ideals of “community and coffee.” This passion and their core values have turned into a successful business that is now made up of 3 locations, a roastery, and an online shop.
Mark has continued to run Hub Coffee Roasters and has begun to source his own coffee beans from South America. Their Yelp reviews are outstanding, and Hub has built a strong customer base. They were groundbreaking when they opened in 2008. Hub was the first non-chain coffee roaster in the Reno area.
You can buy their full line at their website. They offer roasted coffees, a canned cold brew, and other coffee accessories for home delivery. On Wednesdays, you can get 2 bags of freshly roasted coffee for $25.00 (usually ranging from $15.00 – $20.00 each). Double Down Wednesdays are a great way to stock up on their excellent coffee.
### Oregon – Stumptown Coffee Roasters
We’re starting to get into America’s coffee region when we talk about Oregon. Located in Portland, OR, Stumptown Coffee Roasters is the leader in the 3rd Wave Coffee Movement. They won roaster of the year in 2006 and haven’t looked back since. Stumptown might be the grandfather of American cold brew coffee.
They take extreme care and pride in every step of serving up the roasted to perfection bean. Their site touts the relationships they developed and nurture with their supply chain, their roasters, employees, and finally, the end consumer.
They started with one small coffee shop and roastery and have exploded on to the international coffee scene. The company stays true to its Pacific Northwest roots, with 6 locations in Oregon for Portlanders to visit on their daily adventures. They also have multiple locations in LA, New York, and even a Kyoto, Japan location.
Their online store shows the breadth of the business. You can order a cold brew, whole bean, and merch. They have seasonal roasts available and even home brewing gadgets that will help you live your best home coffee brewing life. Speaking of brewing coffee at home, they offer an extensive (and free) home brewing archive so that you can have a virtual barista at your fingertips.
Stumptown has been around for a while, elder roaster if you will. You can’t go wrong with buying their beans. Hey, even sign up for a subscription.
### Washington – Dillanos Coffee Roasters
And here we are, the Coffee Meca of the US. We’ve arrived. Washington State. Home of the specialty coffee empire, Starbucks. But we’re not going to talk about Starbucks. We are talking about Dillanos Coffee Roasters.
Dillanos was started in 1992 by David Morris with some family help. Davis came up with the name because his son’s name is Dillan. Dillanos has gone on to be one of the biggest specialty roasters in America. They specialize in unique roasts with single origins as well. Their packaging has won multiple awards, and they were named the “Best Macro Roaster in North America” in 2011.
Their mission statement is “Help People. Make Friends. Have Fun.”. That seems to be the secret to their success. They offer 49 different blends, single-origin roasts, and samplers, as well as subscription services.
Their One Harvest line is made up of single-origin beans that are purchased from direct trade relationships. The feel-good of direct trade is there are no middlemen in the purchasing process that funnel down the money to the farmer. This ensures the coffee farmer makes as much of their harvest as possible to improve their lives.
### Alaska – Kaladi Brothers Coffee
I didn’t know this, but coffee is a big freaking deal in Alaska. It makes sense considering the average high in the most northern state in our union is **10.4 degrees!** Coffee is hot. Coffee warms you up. And, coffee is something to do when the sun sets at 10:00 am. It makes sense, right?
Kaladi Brother, located in Anchorage, AK, started back in 1984 in Seattle. Believe it or not, Seattle only had 5 Starbucks at the time. They decided to replicate the Seattle coffee street carts in Anchorage.
The company now has 13 coffee shops, roasts millions of pounds of coffee a year, and repeatedly wins awards for some of the best craft roasted coffee in the country. They didn’t stop there. They run an elite barista academy that not only trains their own staff but does consulting for other coffee shops on the best practices of making a killer cup of coffee.
Let’s talk about the Kaladi Goat and how it came to be the logo for the Alaskan coffee empire. Legend has it a goat herder discovered coffee in ancient Arabia when his goats started bouncing off the pasture from eating coffee berries. The herder, named Kaladi, took the berries to a nearby monastery to tell them about the magic berries. It’s been a human favorite ever since. The red goat on Kaladi’s logo is now known for excellent coffee.
You can order your own Kaladi coffee, no cold brew for obvious reasons, home brewing accessories, and merch from their website. They don’t believe in preground beans, so be prepared to grind your own coffee when ordering from Kaladi Brothers Coffee.
### Hawaii – Big Island Coffee Roasters
Did you know that Hawaii is the only state in the US that can grow its coffee? Kona coffee might be the most popular. If you’ve had the pleasure of trying Kona coffee, then you know how good it is.
In 2010, Kaleigh and Brandon founded Big Island Coffee Roasters. They answered Craig’s List ad for a coffee farm that was for sale. The farm was located in Puna on the Big Island of Hawaii. The area was economically disadvantaged, unfortunately, like most indigenous parts of the small island state.
They are committed to quality Hawaiian grown coffee. They’ve received multiple awards for their craft roasted coffee and even were honored by the USDA for their efforts in improving Hawaii’s coffee crops. Their most prestigious award is the Grand Champion coffee for their Puna coffee. It’s still the only Puna coffee to receive the award.
They don’t have a retail storefront, but you can order from their website. They offer only Hawaiian beans, a coffee club, and a line of espresso chocolate bars. And, they ship Monday through Thursday to the rest of the United States and internationally. They add a nice touch of the roast date on every bag. Check out their coffee flights for a little taste of what they have to offer.
## Best Rocky Mountain Coffee Roasters
I love the Mountain States. I lived in Colorado for 13 years and truly fell in love with specialty coffee while there. I’ve mentioned it before, but there is something about a warm coffee when it’s dumping snow outside. Coffee and snow are a combo I don’t get to see a lot here in North Texas. The Mountain States have some outstanding local roasters. Let’s climb in.
### Idaho – DOMA Coffee Roasting Company
DOMA Coffe Roasting Company is located in Post Falls, Idaho, in the state’s northern panhandle area. Husband and wife, Terry and Rebecca Patano, started with a simple mission. They set out to roasting coffee with science and craft as their guiding principals. Their head roaster, Jim Hottenroth, is not only excellent at his craft, he also has a degree in chemistry that gives them the scientific approach to their roasting.
Their company motto is “Do What Matters.” This motto is obvious in its supplier relations, commitment to sustainable manufacturing, and community involvement. One of their driving forces is sustainability. Their coffee bags are compostable. They send their byproducts (chaff, used bags, and grounds) to local farmers for reuse on the local farms.
They have a coffee shop, DOMA Coffee Lab, where they serve their most current roasts, give classes on brewing coffee at home, and it’s the HQ for DOMA. If you can’t make it to the DOMA Coffee Lab, you can order their available roasts and blends online for home delivery. A bag (12 oz) of DOMA coffee ranges from $15.60 to $25.00.
They have some interesting finds in their shop. They’re releasing a new whisky barrel-aged roast that should be incredibly smooth and something a bit different. Another unique find is its instant coffee line. Most coffee lovers turn their nose up at instant coffee. Not this. I took some camping over the summer, and it’s not only convenient but incredibly good.
### Utah – Millcreek Coffee Roasters
The Brewster family runs Millcreek Coffee Roasters in Salt Lake City. There is no irony in the family’s last name and their 2nd generation business. The Brewsters have been roasting and brewing (lol) craft specialty coffee since 1992 for Utah and surrounding areas.
They take great care to ensure you have the freshest beans by posting a roasted date on each bag they sell. They also have a detailed shipping schedule and delivery choice to make sure that at home, orders receive the same freshness that their retail buyers do.
And, they offer their full line of roast and blends at their online store and their Salt Lake shop. Like any good roaster, you can choose your grind. Their coffees that are suitable as cold brew are marked so in their online store. Millcreek also has a robust coffee subscription service.
### Colorado – Boxcar Coffee Roasters
I have to make a disclaimer about Colorado and coffee. I love both. I’m biased, you could say. I moved to Boulder in my early 20’s from Austin and stayed until my mid-30s. It was a wonderful place to become an adult, and I have nothing but fond memories of this quirky mountain town.
Choosing the best coffee roaster in Colorado was a tough one for me. Some of my favorite coffee spots have changed hands since I’ve left the Boulder Valley, but one has stayed true and strong- Boxcar Coffee Roasters.
Located in my beloved Boulder, CO, Boxcar is everything you want in a coffee shop/ coffee roaster. It feels welcoming, and they know their roasting stuff inside and out. The married couple, Vajra and Cara Rich, started Boxcar Coffee Roasters as a roaster with no retail shop. Their goal was to bring expertly roasted coffee to one of Colorado’s favorite places.
Located on the Pearl Street Mall, the company has grown into a stand-alone roastery, a training lab, a few doors down, a coffee shop, and a bakery. There’s a little known fact about roasting and brewing coffee in Colorado (and in the mountains), you’re dealing with altitude. Water boils at a slower rate. This is because there’s less atmosphere meaning there is less oxygen in the air. This is a factor that Boxcar has mastered and produces excellent altitude roasted and brewed coffee.
They offer a full menu of specialty coffee drinks and food at their retail location. If you can’t make it to the Pearl Street Mall, you can visit their online store to buy their award-winning coffee. They offer a variety of roasts, brew equipment, and brew guides.
Much like other Boulder-based businesses, sustainability is a driving value for the roaster and employee satisfaction. Boxcar continues to do business with these values and isn’t stopping anytime soon. If you find yourself landing in Denver, make sure to make the short drive to Boulder to sip on some of the exceptional coffee they have to offer.
### Wyoming – JH Roasters
JH (Jackson Hole) Roasters is a cafe, restaurant, and craft coffee roaster located in historic Jackson Hole, Wyoming. If you’ve has the pleasure of visiting Jackson Hole, you know how special this place is. JH Roasters lives up to the specialness of the town.
My dad is a huge fan of their coffee. When it’s not quarantine time, he’s on a fly fishing adventure. Jackson Hole is one of his favorites. He loves the Peru Organic for his iced coffee in the sweltering Austin summers. Speaking of organic, almost all of JH Roasters beans are organic. They carry a few blends that aren’t certified organic but don’t let that stop you from trying them.
JH Roasters is owned by 2 friends, Stefan and Lubomira (Luba), originally from High Tatras, a region in Slovakia. They met through a foreign exchange program in Jackson Hole as baristas and were inspired to strike out independently. With backgrounds in the European style of coffee, they combined their expertise to open JH Roasters.
You can order all of their coffee roasts and blends online. Plan on a 3-4 day turn around time to ensure the freshest roast is shipped to you. They use USPS priority for all their shipping so if you live in the US tracking information is easy to follow.
### Montana – Black Coffee Roasting Co.
A cheesemonger and a wine sales rep walk into a party. They become friends and realize they love coffee. What did they do? The 2 friends, Matt McQuilkin and Jim Chapman, realized that Missoula was missing something. The liberal, outdoorsy town didn’t have a specialty coffee roaster.
The 2 set out to fill that gap from a garage. What started as a humble dream has grown into Montana’s best coffee roaster. Black Coffee Roasting Co. is located in a Quonset hut in the hip part of Missoula, MT. Their location brings a whimsical blend of craft coffee roasting and industrial design to the roasting space.
The location is a cafe and roaster. McQuilkin and Chapman can be found in the space at any time. They decided to concentrate on organic coffee as their source of beans. They believe that chemicals are bad for humans and coffee.’
You can order their award-winning beans in a variety of grinds for home delivery. Their site has a coffee quiz to help you decide what roast or blend to order based on your taste preferences. I took the coffee quiz to see if what coffee I usually order lines up with the coffee Black Coffee thought was right for me. Guess what? It was spot on. The quiz is super helpful and not something you see at a ton of online coffee stores.
Black Coffee Roasting Co. also offers a coffee subscription program that would be a great gift or if you fall in love with their coffee, but you’re too busy to remember to order more. They offer free shipping on most orders that are delivered within the US.
## Best Midwestern Coffee Roasters
Specialty coffee and the Midwestern states of America are not really two phrases you’d see together very often. I think that’s a shame. The Midwest has some big city’s like Chicago, Detriot, and Indianapolis. There’s also a lot of smaller communities and towns sprinkled through the region.
I love this part of the country and the people who live there. My husband has family from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that we visit as often as we can. I have multiple friends from this region and they swear by the tiny coffee roasters in the area.
I’m speaking from an honest place with you though. I have the same reaction to hearing this as I do when someone tells me to check out the BEST coffee shop in whatever small town in Texas they might be from. Boy, was I wrong. The Midwest might be one of the best craft coffee roasters area of the United States. There’s a need for good hot coffee made by passionate people. The Midwest steps up to the plate with some of the best coffee in the US. Let’s take a look, shall we?
### North Dakota – Twenty Below Coffee Co.
Located in Fargo, ND, Twenty Below has been serving and delivering excellent coffee with compassion to their community. 2 families make up the leadership of Fargo’s and North Dakota’s best coffee roaster.
The Fords and Morans run, ship, and roast coffee as a team. They realized they had a mutual love for great coffee and creating a community space and decided to launch Twenty Below Coffee Company on April 1st, 2015.
Now they deliver their craft roasted beans throughout the United States. They offer single origin and blends for your enjoyment at home. They even have a steep in the bag coffee that I’m really looking forward to trying on my next family camping trip.
You can also purchase branded apparel from their online store. If you live in the Fargo area, you can rent the shop for a private function, have nitro coffee delivered, or request their mobile coffee truck at your next event.
### South Dakota – Pure Bean Roasters
In Rapid City, South Dakota, there’s something special going on. There’s a small coffee roaster that is not only roasting small craft batches of coffee, but they’re also doing it with an air roaster. Around only 1% of coffee beans are air roasted. Air roasting takes the acidic, bitter coffee jitters out of a cup of coffee. Pretty cool, right?
Not only are they roasting their beans in a revolutionary way, but they’re also giving back to their community, the environment, and the world as a whole. All of their coffee lots are organic and fair trade certified.
It doesn’t stop there either. 10% of the proceeds from the sale of their single origin coffee supports orphaned and severely impoverished children around the world. Their project, Coffee with a Cause, is their spearhead program to help end the suffering of disadvantaged children through their coffee proceeds.
You can order their coffee online for nationwide delivery. I’m eyeing the 695 Blend. It’s a blend of South Pacific beans that bring a full body depending on the beans’ grind. Suppose you’re looking for a special gift for a coffee lover. They can do specialty labels on any bag of your choosing.
### Nebraska – Archetype Coffee
Archetype Coffee opened in May of 2014 by coffee industry expert Isiah Sheese. Isiah set out to roast and brew serious coffee while have fun doing it. Isiah thinks, like most of us, that coffee can get pretentious real fast. He wanted to bring some fun and lightness to craft roasting in Omaha, NE.
Archetype has grown into 2 locations (including their roastery). Archetype has a loyal following and is the winner of multiple barista competition awards. You can visit either of their locations for an excellent latte or order online.
Their online shop offers a select range of blends and single origin roasts for home delivery. If you live in the area, you can schedule a free pick-up. They also offer a subscription program that lets you decide the type of roast and delivery options.
### Kansas – PT’s Coffee Roasting Co.
PT’s gets its name from Jeff Taylor and Fred Polzin, founded PT’s (P for Polzin, T for Taylor). The 2 set out in 1993 to make excellent coffee for Topeka, Kansas. They’ve gone on to win some serious accolades and awards. They won best macro coffee roaster in 2009 and have been voted best coffee house for multiple years in a row.
The company has also set up several direct trade relationships with coffee farmers to cut out the middle man, thereby ensuring the farmer makes the most money when selling their crop. They also offer a few organic single origins as well as continuing education for their employees.
Taylor is one of the United States Barista Competition founders and is a judge worldwide for other barista competitions. This expertise has garnered some of their staff wins in barista competitions.
Their online store and educational materials are robust. They offer over 40 94+ rated coffees for home delivery as well as subscription boxes. If you’re looking for a one-stop-shop for everything coffee, they also have brewing gearing and merch for sale.
They’ve gone on to open 2 additional locations in Missouri. Pretty cool that 2 friends who love coffee could harness their passion to build one of the country’s best coffee roasters.
### Minnesota – Welsey Andrews Coffee Company
When I was choosing the best coffee roaster in Minnesota, I was in a pickle. There are so many wonderful independent coffee roasters in the state, but Wesley Andrews stood out. Not only do they have a rosemary fennel latte on their drink menu, but they also have a unique take on craft roasted coffee.
They purchase the majority of their green coffee beans from a small farm in Columbia and keep that relationship value with the rest of their supply chain. They believe that the relationship in any part of their company is the cornerstone of their final product.
Located in St. Paul, Minnesota, Wesley Andrews has a beautiful brick-and-mortar shop that offers seasonal coffee drinks (still drooling over the rosemary fennel latte), cold brew, pour over, and just about any other coffee drink you can imagine. They also have ready to drink coffees as well as a small food menu.
The Wesley Andrews has a full online store with a select variety of their in-house roasts for home delivery and a subscription service.
### Iowa – Sidecar Coffee Roasters
Sidecar Coffee Roasters is located in Cedar Falls, Iowa, with its roasting facility in Waterloo. The roaster and coffee shop started as a hobby and soon expanded into 2 cafe locations with a dedicated roasting facility.
Sidecar maintains many direct trade relationships with coffee farmers around the world. They value hand-crafted small-batch roasted coffee and want to share that with Iowa and the country. Their motto is “listen to the coffee; let it sing.”
You can buy their coffee at their online store for home delivery. They have a variety of single origin and blends to suit any coffee drinker’s tastes. They also offer green coffee beans for home delivery. This allows the customer to fiddle around with their own roasting adventures.
### Illinois – Intelligentsia
Necessity is the mother of invention that drove the birth of Illinois’ best coffee roaster. Intelligentsia is the brainchild of Doug Zell and Emily Mange. When the pair moved from San Francisco to Chicago, they just wanted good coffee. They realized that Chicago didn’t have great coffee. So what does one do? For that reason they started roasting their own coffee.
The simple need for excellent coffee has blossomed into 15 locations with 2 roasteries and 2 training labs. I’m looking forward to visiting the Austin location the next time I’m home visiting my parents.
If you don’t live in Chicago, Austin, Boston, New York, or LA, you’re in luck. Intelligentsia offers online shopping. You can order single origin and blended coffees for delivery nationwide. If you’re in the market for brew equipment, they have that too. Maybe you really want to get into pour over coffee but don’t know what grind to use on your new Chemex pour over coffee brewer. They have brew guides as well.
### Indiana – Bee Coffee Roasters
“Locally roaster coffee for everyone,” that’s Bee Coffee Roasters’ tag line. I like it. I was instantly drawn to this coffee roaster, located in Indianapolis, when I was visiting a few years ago for a wedding. All of my Indy friends insisted I had to go there since coffee is my thing. I was floored. It’s fantastic.
Bee has 2 locations, the Hive and the Swarm. The Hive is their original location and houses their roaster. And they offer a full coffee menu, and some select breakfast items. I really loved the Serenity. It’s a cappuccino with honey (of course) and housemade lavender syrup.
If you don’t live in the area, you can order their variety of roasts, seasonal blends, and everyday blends online. They offer competitive shipping rates. I’m going to order the Snow Fort blend on Friday. It’s their holiday blend, and I can’t wait for my mom and me to dive in on Christmas morning.
### Ohio – Crimson Cup Coffee Roasters
Founder Greg Ubert wasn’t happy at 23 years old. He was a recent Harvard graduate, had a killer job, didn’t need anything. Except for one thing, one essential thing. His life didn’t inspire him. Greg stopped everything and decided to open his own coffee company.
Little did he know he would be embarking on building a coffee roasting movement. Crimson Cup Coffee Roasters has turned into a multi-location company that also helps other aspiring coffee roasters to be successful in the industry.
Located in Columbus, Ohio, this company could’ve lost sight of Greg’s original dream of roasting small batch coffee for his community. They still roast their beans in small batchs for distribution nationwide. Crimson cup runs locations nationwide but still stays close to their Ohio roots.
If your community doesn’t have a Crimson Cup, you can order their coffee online for home delivery. You can order a single bag, sign up for their subscription box, or order their brewing equipment.
Find what you love and do it.
### Michigan – Madcap Coffee Roasters
What started as a friendship that brought together 2 people obsessed with great coffee has flowered into a coffee business that roasts their own direct trade beans, has 3 coffee shops, and is in other shops nationwide. Trevor Corlett and Ryan Knapp opened Madcap Coffee Roasters in 2008. Located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the 2 haven’t looked back since.
Their passion for coffee, the relationships you build through sourcing and drinking coffee, and sharing that ultimate cup with a community is what drives their business. They taste around 3,000 different coffees a year and decide only 15-20 to roast in their original location.
And Madcap has recently expanded to another training and roasting facility in Washinton, D.C., that houses a coffee shop.
If you would like to order some of their small batch roasted coffee, you can visit their online store. I personally have been ordering their Elefante beans. The name comes from the enormous fruit that the Elefante bush grows. It’s smooth, citrusy, chocolate notes make this roast one of my favorites.
### Wisconsin – Ruby Coffee Roasters
Colorful Coffees is the goal at Ruby Coffee Roasters. Ruby Coffee Roasters is the best roaster in Wisconsin. They take the time to build the supply relationships to roast the most vibrant coffees possible.
Originally started in a garage in rural Portage County, founder Jared wanted to bring his specialty coffee experience home to Wisconsin. He eventually moved his roasting facility to nearby Nelsonville, WI, to expand his passion for good coffee.
One of the guiding values of Ruby Coffee is a responsible business can do good and create value for everyone involved. With this founding principle in all the business steps, Ruby Coffee Roasters has an exceptional business with transparent supply chains.
They have partnered with Swift Cup to offer their fans a true instant cup of coffee called Instant Creamery. It’s a freeze-dried process that promises to preserve the rich true flavor of their popular Creamery blend. The coffee packets can be added to hot or cold water for an instant cup of coffee wherever you are. My list of instant coffees to try while camping or traveling is getting longer and longer.
You can order their coffee beans online with the option for local pick up or home delivery. Ruby Coffee Roasters gives its customers a choice in the grinds to meet their brewing needs. Their shipping prices are hard to beat. When I ordered a bag of their cheers holiday blend, it was just $3.00 for shipping.
## Conclusion
I hope you have a bucket list of new roasters to try. Since America’s 3rd wave coffee movement is going strong and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon go out and try some of these independent coffee roasters.
What a time we live in!
