I largely agree w/you here. But distinguishing sensible compromise from “throwing under the bus” isn’t always so easy. E.g. it seems like favoring civil rights protections (against discrimination and hate crimes) for trans people, while stepping back from pronouns and sports, seems sensible ...

A better response from the teacher might be, "This may be contrary to your religion, but you're not required to believe it, only to understand it - in fact if you can refute it, more power to you."
