I’m sure Aquilini considers himself a shrewd businessman. But it doesn’t take much to realize that what the graphic below shows, which is a shameful lack of assets, maybe the worst in the league, is a terrible recipe for business success.

The only way to explain where the Canucks are on this graphic is that either Canucks mgmt sucks, or the mandate given by the owner sucks. Could be both, but I think it’s the latter.

The Hurricanes have proved that maxing out on draft capital does not mean you have to tear things down to rebuild. I dislike the term actually. They are in constant retool. Part of retooling should be maximizing draft capital while remaining competitive.

So, next game, Canucks vs Tampa. In the last 10 years the Lightning have won 2 cups and made the playoffs nine times. And YET over that time the Lightning have had two more picks in the first 3 rds of the draft than Vancouver! A fan’s nightmare.

Canucks are in the zone where as prudent management you shift to maximizing draft capital. See if you can double or triple your picks in the first three rounds. Call it what you want. They need a plan to improve assets at all positions over the next 3 years.

Interesting Kane has never survived a full season without injury. Having said that, the operations sought to correct a lot of problems, including a growth on his knee. If all have mended well, he could be in better shape than he has been.
