I like James Nicoll's take on it:

At least not on purpose, IYKWIM.

I won't go into the movie here, as I've only seen it once and it seems to be one that repays multiple viewings (no surprise there), but one technical note I haven't seen elsewhere: Father Jud, the former boxer, looks like he's got a bit of cauliflower ears. If that's makeup, it was a great choice.

I think that's because it's the moment that we the audience can really see the depth of Father Jud's vocation (and that Johnson doesn't treat it as a punch line), and Blanc's inability to understand it--those aspects of their characters really define their interactions going forward.

When they make that noise on site, you can hear it for at least a couple hundred yards.

I also see a lot of similarities to my mom, who had vascular dementia. Her personality stayed intact to the end, but IMCUO she was a much better person than he was--the worst she got was trash-talking one of the other people at the memory care facility.

So many people for whom Ross could be a plausible Tuckerization....

We're an exception, just not in the ways that most of the people who use the term think of it.

A while ago I realized that Elon Musk behaved like the Rule of Cool trumped physical reality, and since then I've seen nothing to call that into question for him or a lot of other tech billionaires.

I don't think they'll need to wonder.

Interesting idea, but that'd be hard when (as happened in 2009) the incoming president made his chief rival in the primary his Secretary of State. That's not common, though.

Yeah. Driving from IL to PA on I-80, we don't stop in IN if we can help it, 'cause their roadsides *suck*.

This. I don't want to have to think about managing health care, I want to pay someone trustworthy* to do it for me.

*And regulate tf out of them, because that's how I know I can trust them.

The ones I saw in Palo Alto a few years ago had homes, but could only afford one far away from where they were working. So during the week they'd park an RV on El Camino and stay there to avoid a crippling commute.

We don't know where he'd be without that level of medical support.

OTOH, considering how long it took your dad: how much stress was he under for that time? How often did he travel overseas? How was his diet, and did he get any exercise?
December 10, 2025 at 7:50 PM
As long as he can still say that coherently.
