Truly humbled by the extraordinary talent and intellect of the NIH scientists and grateful for the science/biomedical research funded by NIH that has given so many a second chance in life.
On days like these…when it is sleeting and raining heavily, Sóla must still be walked. 36F/93%/4MPH SSE. Dogs:3; Cyclists:1. Discussion on the walk: what causes SI. Sóla will zoom around the house after toweling off- it is stimulating. Dec. 2 advent sweet: Boy with Christmas gift. #Dogsofbluesky

Just completed this 12”x12” stained glass mosaic inspired by the gorgeous ceiling mosaics in the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, a 5th Century oratory built in the shape of the Latin cross and dedicated to St Lawrence. We visited the oratory recently when we were in Ravenna, Italy.

Sóla’s Monday AM walk. 34F/72%/10 MPH NW. Dogs:18; Runners:2; Cyclists:3. Positively balmy compared to the cold we experienced in Ann Arbor. Sóla is always very happy to go outside, no matter the weather. Dec 1 Lindt advent calendar sweet - Father Christmas. Now to split it .5/.5. #Dogsofbluesky.

Sóla’s Sunday AM walk: 37F/79%/11MPH S. Dogs:5; Runners:1. Not good weather for driving today. The turnpikes we drove on yesterday were less crowded than expected early on but once the football games ended, the traffic worsened by the minute. The Laurel tunnel stretch was bad and 70/270 super slow.

Real Michiganders by now, I’m happy my family love Michigan but wish it were not so far away. The nine hour drive limits the amount of time we can visit and prevents me from driving there alone. Still, I’d rather they be self sufficient and happy than to be close and unhappy. Parent’s love!

Another interesting WTF is that truck haul on the OH Turnpike, as seen rolling East on Saturday, November 29. Crates of stone?

Trip to Chelsea, MI for coffee, bread, wine, and to buy some warm hats.

Mason, our friend in Ann Arbor, took this of us yesterday outside the B&B. Sóla loves Mason and Mason’s dad, loves 4-Runners.

Obligatory Thanksgiving pics from yesterday. Daughter roasted a duck, made parsnip, kohlrabi and spud mash; stuffing; roasted sprouts/carrots; DIL made butternut tart and brioche rolls; M made cranberry sauce and red cabbage; Tracklements made smoked salmon & smoked olives. Argus made a cherry pie.

Sóla’s Friday AM walk: 26F(feels like 11)/72%/15MPH WNW. Dogs: 5; Runners:5. Blustery today so we kept the walk to 3 miles. Having overeaten yesterday, we felt we should walk 3 miles despite the cold temperature. Snow is forecast here tomorrow and we have a long drive tomorrow. #Dogsofbluesky

Nice visiting with my glass artist friend Mason today. He will have a booth at a holiday fair in Detroit in a week or so and has been working on a lot of new projects. The bug is a photograph placed between two panes of glass. I don’t know how he makes these pieces but they are unique.

Sóla’s AM Thursday walk: 30F/(feels like 15)/60%/18 MPH WNW. Dogs:10; Runners:25-30. Snow flurries and .5-1” snow cover. Sóla loves the snow and the fox squirrels. Nice to be in Ann Arbor with family for Thanksgiving. #Dogsofbluesky

Barton Dam, first trip walking through the new tunnel so we could walk all the way to the dam. #Dogsofbluesky

One of the trains that give “The Train House” its name - running on
the Toledo line and right beside the house where we are staying in Ann Arbor. A train passes by in the night 2-3 times and must by law blow its horn for each level crossing. There are three nearby.

Sóla’s PM walk - in Ann Arbor: 36F(feels like 15)/66%/22 MPH WSW. Snowing and blowing and face/teeth cracking cold but so glad to be here at “Train House” for Thanksgiving with favorite daughter. The house is a converted three bay garage and is shared with a glass artist’s studio. #Dogsofbluesky

Drove by one of our favorite curiosities in PA today. Just outside of Scenery Hill, on 40 West, someone places a large object on top of their grain silo. Last time we went by, a green camper van was on top. Today, a boat is on the silo. The driver of van and boat is the same dummy.

The OH turnpike always delivers at least one “WTF is that”
truck load. Seen on I80 West <58 miles from Toledo. I’m guessing it is metal to be recycled somewhere.

Coal Center, PA for the cheesy fries, a blue moon burger and a Dogfish head IPA. The beer came from Todd’s distributor. This town has become our go to place for dinner when we overnight in California, PA en route to AA, MI.

Sóla’s Tuesday AM walk: 44T/76%/8 MPH S. Dogs:15; Runners:2. Today, the sky was red and a weather system is due in around 15:00. Hope to be well on our way before the rain hits. Sóla’s loves car trips and is happy ‘cause her bag is by the front door-she knows she is going with us. #Dogsofbluesky

Well, the cranberry sauce is made. M uses a recipe from a 1989 Bon Appetit. It is always requested. That sauce is Thanksgiving here. Sóla helps by sitting in the middle of the kitchen floor where she can keep an eye out for any fallen edible objects.

Sóla’s Monday A.M. walk: 38F/74%/5 MPH NNW. Dogs:15; Runners:9; Cyclists:2. Today a German Shepherd followed us for a few blocks. Sóla walked sideways with her head facing backwards towards the dog ever aware of potential threats to her family. Border collies are great guard dogs. #Dogsofbluesky
November 24, 2025 at 1:38 PM
Sóla’s Sunday AM walk: 35F/86%/3 MPH SSW. Dogs:20; Runners:4; Tennis players:4. No matter how many times we walk this path, no two days are the same. We always see new things. Today’s discussion: Nietschze - when you look into the abyss, the abyss looks back into you & Sóla’s smiles. #Dogsofbluesky
November 23, 2025 at 1:54 PM
Sóla’s Saturday AM walk: 51F/90%/6 MPH N. Dogs:11; Runners:2. Gray drizzly day, nice rain puddles. Sóla is going to get a shower today, whether she likes it or not. She smells like a mud puddle as in wet dog and not so nice. #Dogsofbluesky

Achill Island trip continued: We took shelter from a squall in a hut used by sheep to escape the rain and we stood up to our ankles in sheep s$&t. It was an adventure and I’d do it again in a second.

On this the fifth day of gray, I looked for a photo taken of gray skies- the green house on Achill Island, Co. Mayo, Ireland, September 17, 2017. This was on a trip to attend a family wedding - it rained, poured buckets, flooded roads and we got soaked on nearly every hike but sure it is only rain.
