· BUT: When it comes to insults, female MPs face disproportionate backlash compared to men.

· Interestingly, female MPs can slightly reduce insulting responses by using more insulting language themselves, suggesting a gendered pattern of self-defense.

We analyzed German MPs' language in their own Tweets, as well as the mentions of their user name and found the following:

· Male and female MPs use similar levels of incivility (critical and insulting language) on Twitter and receive more critical responses when using critical tweets.
