i think my favorite way i've heard this concept described is 'cognitive dependence,' like the extent to which an object of inquiry is constructed by the human investigating it. but i think in STS land the consensus is that even hard sciences have some amount of cognitive dependence in measures

So if we think about college as primarily providing ROI through the institution's brand name and networking opportunities, students are basically free to study whatever they find interesting, as it's fairly unlikely that particular coursework will have a big impact on their professional outcomes
