The simplest conventional measure of inequality, the Gini index, is higher today than at any point in modern U.S. history except for a peak in 2018-19. A higher Gini index indicates a more unequal distribution, while a lower index signifies greater equality.

U.S. is not in a good place.

The last penny was struck at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, the end of a coin production that started in 1793 and ended Nov. 12, 2025.

Now purchases will be rounded up/down to nearest nickel. The penny cost 3.7 cents to produce while a nickel cost 13.8 cents to make.
