Renowned drummer, Kenny Clarke was born on January 9, 1914, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and passed away on January 26, 1985, in Paris, France. He was recognized as a jazz drummer and was an early innovator of the bebop style of drumming.

Renown vibraphonist, Milt Jackson was born on January 1, 1923, in Detroit and passed away on October 9, 1999. He joined Dizzy Gillespie’s sextet and big band in 1945. Jackson was a member of MJQ (Modern Jazz Quartet).

Renowned drummer and composer, Max Roach was born on January 10, 1924 and passed away on August 16, 2007. He participated in the development of Bebop. In addition, Roach elevated the percussionist to the equal of a melodic improvisers.

Renowned pianist and composer Cedar Walton, Jr. was born on January 17, 1934 and passed on August 19, 2013. In April 1959, he recorded with John Coltrane and became a member of the Jazztet.

Renowned guitarist Joe Pass was born on January 13, 1929 and passed on May 23, 1994. He collaborated with pianist Oscar Peterson and vocalist Ella Fitzgerald. Pass won a Grammy, for Best Jazz Performance by a Group in 1975, for the album “TheTrio”.

Renowned trombonist, arranger, composer and educator Melba Liston was born on January 13, 1926 and passed on April 23, 1999. She was an impressive trombone player and first female trombonist to perform in a Big Band. Liston was also known as a wonderful arranger.

Renowned pianist, vocalist, composer, and bandleader, Jay McShann, was born on January 12, 1916, and passed on December 7, 2006. He led bands in Kansas City, Missouri, which featured musicians such as Charlie Parker, Paul Quinichette, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Ben Webster, just to name a few.
