Brief encounter is a timeless classic. From a similar era have you by chance ever seen Hobsons choice(1954) ? It stars Charles Laughton, John Mills and a teenage Prunella Scales!! Laughton is hilarious lol and it's an early film by David Lean, arguably the greatest UK director of all

What a band !! This was the first LP I ever bought, I still have it in my car. Specials are obviously the most significant band of that scene and I also love them but The Beat i really loved !!

Unlikely warriors by @richardbaxell.bsky.social is an excellent account of the Brits who joined the international brigades and fought fascism in civil war Spain. This is my well worn copy, its an inspiring read

For inspiration, everyone should read about the battle of Cable street in east London in 1936, when a diverse community stood together in their 10,000s to physically prevent fascists matching through their area #NoPasaran

I'm maybe 50/50 on fiction/non fiction. I've got this one about Spanish civil war hero Bueventura Durruti to start, and this collection of the writings from 70s/80s music critic Lester Bangs as well

We may have already discussed XTC but they were one of my favourite groups in the mid 80s. I've still got "Generals and Majors" and "Towers of London" in gatefold/double 7" packs

A movie about northern soul would have to try especially hard not to have a fantastic soundtrack I think

If you ever find yourself further towards Wakefield the @hepworthwakefield.bsky.social is definitely worth a visit. I work right across from it and its a tremendous art gallery of Barbara Hepworth but also many other artists, its right on the river Calder as well, just float down from Halifax lol

My mate used to have a sit down table version of 1942 in his front room, the last stage when it was UFOs I think. Gyruss was also great, the last enemies before yo reached earth. Also Phoenix a space shoot em up where one stage was giant birds(?)that you could shoot a wing off and not kill them
September 29, 2025 at 8:52 PM
