But this issue isn't new. Industry has struggled to manage the risks of lead recycling since the early 20th c, when Alice Hamilton first helped spotlight the issue.

In the US, the lead-acid battery industry, led by @batterycouncil.bsky.social (founded in 1924) has been championing the industry as the model for recycling and re-use lead-acid batteries since the 1990s.

Here is what you'll see on their website:

At The Big Green Machine, my @wellesley.edu students and I are tracking more than 600 clean energy manufacturing projects in North America.

Let us know what we are missing, what we’ve got wrong, and what needs updating. 🔌💡

While it is good news that previously announced projects continue to advance, when we narrow the scope of analysis to newly announced projects by quarter versus canceled, paused, or closed projects by quarter, the Trump bust continues — the pipeline of new projects is getting smaller.

US clean energy manufacturing investments slowed again last month.

We are now tracking 64 projects, $66.8B in investment, and 66,488 jobs at The Big Green Machine that have been delayed, shrunk, paused, or cancelled since Trump took office.

In the conclusion of my book Charged, I take up that general question - what would happen if some other battery chemistry - and, like you say, maybe sodium-ion - replaced lead-acid batteries. What would happen to all the lead circulating through the built environment that we cannot leave behind?

Right. A sharp reminder that “highly recycled” and “green” aren’t necessarily the same thing. Here is how I put it in my book.

There is much to be learned from the global trade in lead-acid batteries as we look toward a future powered by more and more batteries.

This is a key point of my book, Charged: A History of Batteries and Lessons for a Clean Energy Future, which follows that story from lead-acid to li-ion batteries.

This is a really helpful report that explains what Community Benefits Agreements are and how they give communities leverage in negotiations around energy transition projects. Worth reading for the insights, four well-researched case studies, and excellent use of Storymaps!

Are the slow downs concentrated in Democratic-led congressional districts? Our tracking says no.

In general, slow downs are following the same pattern as investments in US clean energy manufacturing — meaning they are largely concentrated in Republican-led congressional districts. 🔌💡

For the first time since Trump’s inauguration, projects that have advanced toward production exceed those that have suffered delays, been reduced in size, canceled, or paused across all metrics (number of projects, size of investment, and announced jobs).

Is the Trump slow down in clean energy manufacturing investments bottoming out?

Our tracking shows that new investments in US clean energy manufacturing during Q3 2025 exceeded canceled or paused projects for the first time since Q3 2024. 🔌💡

It is fascinating to see the expanding role of batteries on California's grid. gridstatus.io has the real-time data!

Remarkable that there have been no Flex Alerts for CA since 2022 - real gains for grid resiliency.

Since Trump took office, 80 projects adding up to $43.8B in investment and 50,813 job have advanced. Most are projects previously announced that have started construction or moved into production.

Only 33 new projects adding up to $8B and 13,310 jobs have been announced since Trump took office.

Trump 2.0 + 8 months. The slow down in clean energy manufacturing investments is still growing.

We are tracking 50 slowed projects adding up to $51.8B in investment and 50,381 jobs - up from 39 projects, $41.8B, and 42,429 jobs last month.

More on what has slowed and advanced below. 🔌💡
