Historian of 19th-c Ireland, Britain, & Empire at University College Cork. An 🇺🇸in 🇮🇪. Book on agrarian violence and British policy w Cambridge (2022). Next project on Irishmen, education, and empire.
I do rather love this description though.
"The roar of cheering which followed upon the hon. and learned gentleman...can scarcely be conceived by those unaccustomed to witness the effect of several hundred thousand voices engaged in an effort of physical exertion, peculiar to Irishmen..."

Reading the repeal speech O'Connell gave in Skibbereen in June 1843, and this has Brexit-y vibes about it.

Something wonderful about how the later afternoon winter’s sun hits St Fin Barre’s cathedral.

Hark! What’s that I hear?

…ahh yes, the din of hundreds of students queuing in Christmas jumpers at 9:52am in front of the pub for the annual chaos that is “College Christmas”

1832 Committee on Tithes: "The late Bishop of Cork said to me, 'We are in the habit of blaming the Roman-catholics for the resistance to tithes, but I believe, if the real truth was known, there is scarcely any country gentlemen in Ireland who is not in his heart a whiteboy.'"

O'Connell:
Broke: Talking about his love for Queen Victoria
Woke: Talking shite about Feargus O'Connor and the Charists
Bespoke: Telling a bunch of people in Bandon about how great it was that Irish soldiers – especially a Kerryman! – suppressed the Newport rising.

O'Connell was oddly proud of Irishmen putting down the Newport rising in 1839.

An alumnus: "My dear University, please accept these 200 bladder stones from various patients across India. I removed them myself!"

University: "Ah yes, thank you - a fine collection, if we do say so ourselves!"

I know nothing about wine and maybe I’ve been had, but I think this is the most pleasing €12 bottle of wine I’ve ever had (purchased at Aldi).

A petition presented to parliament in August 1835, of a parish priest calling out a voter from the pulpit for selling their vote, and entreating the parish not to do any business with him (aka - a boycott).
Of course, knew this practice happened regularly, but never seen a petition about it. 🗃️

Someone burning a bunch of garbage on your property when you’re not there…not ideal.

Second day of ownership and we found some imperfect but nevertheless vastly superior parquet floors under ratty old carpet.

Reading 'Excursions from Bandon, in the South of Ireland by a Plain Englishman' for something I am working on and the HaithiTrust scans show that Charles Sumner donated the book to Harvard in Oct 1863. 🗃️
