This is a very cute wading bird, black and white with long pink legs and a long, slightly upturned bill. The head, neck and back are black. The front, starting from under the eye, is white. And the bird has a white eyebrow that stands out against the black head. The photo shows the bird standing in very still, shallow water and the reflection in the water is very clear.

The bird's head and body are a beautiful slate blue and the belly is white. The front of the neck which is barely visible in this photo is a white stripe with lavender markings and there is another hint of lavender where the long neck meets the body. The long legs are pale yellow. And the bird has two feathers, a few inches long, emerging from the back of the head.

"Bright green plaster cats populate a grey kitchen, swarming around an open refrigerator. In their frenzy, the cats seem to have knocked over a chair that lies broken in the foreground. The space resembles the interior of a New York tenement building, low rise apartments built in the nineteenth century for working-class immigrants. Even in a city in which manufactured creations seem to prevail over nature, Skoglund depicts New York street cats invading a home. This juvenile is almost completely brown with a brown checkerboard pattern on its back and sides and a black tail and bill. It will take the gull four years to develop the adult white and gray coloring with a yellow bill. The bird is perched on a large boulder mostly covered with bird poop. A largish raptor sits atop a telephone line and looks off slightly to its right. The bird has heavy mottling at the neck and upper chest and more irregular spotting on the lower chest and sides, indicative that the bird is a juvenile as adults have mostly solid coloring in those areas.
