Info from Occupy WallStreet, explaining that painters masks and protective goggles from a hardware store are useful, tear gas is a particulate not an actual gas, tear gas irritates the eyes and respiratory system, but a solution of 50% Maalox and 50% water can be used to clean away tear gas and pepper spray. If you are attacked, use the spray on yourself, and then call out to others to come to the sound of your voice, and spray their eyes and mouths.
