I had a book come out this year that you can vote for! The Island of Dreams is a dark YA fantasy inspired by Peter Pan that focuses on disability and ageism and our assumptions about whose dreams are eligible for paradise and a chosen path to the good place.

A whole life lost just when she was getting started. There’s no mention of that girl in the book, but her ghost is there in the promise of my Neverland, a place for children to have the eternal summers of childhood that mortal life didn’t grant them.

At the age of four I had heart surgery that saved my life. The girl in the bed next to me had the same condition, went through the same surgery and did not survive. My entire life, this story has followed me. I was the one who survived. She is still the first and only child I’ve known to die young.

The Island of Dreams is my fifth published book and probably the twentieth novel I’ve written. Sometimes, its easy to think, well, its just one of many. But it’s also entirely different from what’s come before. I don’t expect to write anything like it again. I was a sick kid back in the day.

Nothing is ever as perfect as I want it to be, no idea of representation is going to satisfy everyone. But as we’re halfway through #disabilitypride and one week out from the launch of a book that would not be what it is without all the activists who put themselves out in these world to teach us.
