Thanks. The thing is when I read about your elections they make no sense to me either. It’s really all about what we’re used to. But believe me you have no idea how often I have wished I were Canadian in the past ten years since the Trump nightmare began! And with that I wish you happiest holidays!

I know. And what I’m saying is when you say Independent here you are saying I am not affiliated with either party. That’s all. It’s just the way it is here. I’m not saying it’s the way it should be but it’s the system we have. Sorry if this is turning into a faff

Registering by party can allow you to vote in that party’s primary. You absolutely need to register to vote in the national or any election and you don’t need to be affiliated with a party. Thus the selection of independent. Listen, I’m not arguing in favor of the system I’m just explaining it.

Not sure I understand your point. My point was we don’t have to be wedded to a party as an independent and can vote for either the Republican or the Democratic candidate.

Just to clarify in the US you can register as independent. It allows one to vote in general election but depending on the state one lives in an independent may not be allowed to vote in a party’s primary. I allow that our system has many flaws, not least that horrible electoral college
