We’re nearing the end of the year and there will be so many “new” movies to get to in the next 3 months, so let me remind you of the JOY of rewatching movies you love.

In related news, I think KNIVES OUT gets better every time I revisit it?

For @paopalina.bsky.social’s birthday weekend, I attempted the impossible—copying the great Baked Joint bakery’s goat cheese and caramelized onion biscuits. (NB: U.S. definition of biscuit)

Done! Very easy, thanks for the tip.

I’m in the middle of about 6 other books, including at least 2 essay collections and a stack of recent magazines I’m behind on, but I couldn’t resist this when I saw it at Kramer’s Books yesterday… edited by Wesley Morris!?

Why is print media dying??? 🤔😵

DOUBLE INDEMNITY is great, right? The perfect crime unraveled by the perfect ‘detective’, exactly as predicted! Really rewards rewatches.

Let’s get a TV series featuring Barton Keyes sniffing out insurance scams week by week, ASAP.

BIG NIGHT (1996) was hyped up so much for me, it had very little chance of succeeding. And then it blew my high expectations away. What a warm, cozy, delicious movie with a cast full of perfect actors! I loved it. 10/10

I’d actually been hoping for a couple years you (specifically you, no lie) might appear there one day even just to mark things as watched with a link to your Slate review!

LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN (1945) — in glorious Technicolor! Gene Tierney, Gene Tierney, Gene Tierney. She’s SO good as the prototypical femme fatale, she more than makes up for Cornel Wilde’s limp, lifeless protagonist.

PRISCILLA is technically excellent and, like many of Coppola’s films, operating on a number of levels, some of which I usually miss on the first watch. I put it at 4th of her films for me, for now.

LADIES IN RETIREMENT had me dying to understand how they did those opening titles. It's a creepy, Poe-adjacent portrait of a murderer featuring an absolutely chilling Ida Lupino.

I’m already well into the audiobook of @mattsinger.bsky.social’s excellent new OPPOSABLE THUMBS book on Siskel and Ebert, but I finally had time to get over to Politics and Prose today to pick up the hardcover.

Read this book! 👍👍

I didn’t try for this at all and yet 10 of my Top 12 favorites of 2023 so far were directed by women. What a year!

THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI was a treat, not because it’s a flawless film but mostly because Rita Hayworth is divine and the ending is incredible.

You know, I think I always casually assumed “How’d’ya like dem apples?” in Good Will Hunting was a silly, nonsense invention of Damon and Affleck.

Here it is, showing up in the 1968 movie “Rachel, Rachel”!

Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969) is a funny, horny, weird little movie!
