We could try privatize the collection: let Josef O’Shea and others identify and seize properties with uncollected taxes, develop and sell off, paying the tax owed and putting property back into circulation. The nominal initial value can be deducted from the sale and put into escrow?

Yeah but those homes will still be rented at a (high) market rate. A flooding of extra housing onto the market would drive down prices but primarily Irish social forces will stop that.

You know I’m not sure we’re even that calculated. I genuinely think that inertia as an ideology is our big problem: that most pols recognize that most Irish voters are suspicious of any new housing near them and therefore the politically safest thing to do is nothing.
