As long as mitochondrial fusion and fission rates are balanced, mtDNA acquires mutations at the wild type frequency! Additionally, increasing the quantity of mtDNA can suppress the rate at which cells lose mitochondrial respiratory competence due to acquired mtDNA mutations.
