No more telling us how to respond to racism and rudeness. No more telling us what's racist or not racist, what's rude or not rude.

I was born in the Philippines and moved to the States when I was seven. Being so far from my motherland at such a young age felt disorienting—I couldn’t grasp all I’d left behind. But growing up Filipino American in the heartbeat of Black culture and the Chicano neighborhoods of... 1/2

"Culture is not a backdrop. It’s not for rent. When we treat New Orleans like a theme park, we turn living communities into caricatures and push out the very people who make this city what it is.

Preserving culture means protecting the people who carry it."

"Loving the culture means loving the people who create and carry it.
It means building real connections, not just enjoying the surface.

This city has so much heart—but you only feel it fully when you’re in real relationship with it."

"The way someone handles their anger tells you everything you need to know about their emotional maturity, self-control, and most importantly, how deeply they respect you. See, anybody can love you when it’s easy. The moment where all the fluff fades, their truest self steps forward." 1/3

Loving a culture — visiting the place, wearing the clothing, going to the events, even making art inspired by it — doesn’t automatically mean you understand the people who live that culture. 1/3

As a person of color - everyday you're in a room where racist or biased comments are being dropped casually, and you're also navigating complex dynamics: power, professionalism, isolation, and emotional labor. 1/2

"They were kind sometimes, but they also made me feel small, dismissed, and disrespected—and that matters more."

"What a true ally looks like:
1. They take accountability without defensiveness.
They don’t say “I didn’t mean it that way” or “That’s not who I am.” They say, “I’m sorry I hurt you,” and they work to understand why it was harmful." 1/

"You can stay discerning. You can stay cautious.
You can say: You’ve shown me who you are, and I believe you. Even if you smile while doing it."

"Kindness is the floor. Anti-racism is the goal. Both matter. And neither one alone is enough."

Shoutout to my friend who when I called out their acquaintance's racism - #1 believed me-didn't even care for an explanation, #2 not hanging out w that person #3 said that person needs to get punched in the face.

I always feel recharged being around people who think deeply about issues like racism, people who read voraciously to learn different perspectives, different voices, different cultures. Can't wait for next year's New Orleans Book Fest!

“I talk about white supremacy and anti-racism because I live with the impact of it every single day. My posts aren’t theory. They’re survival. They’re truth-telling. They’re about creating a world where I—and people like me—can breathe.”

"The people who do stay—the yt friends who lean in, reflect, share, and learn—those are the ones you want around. They’re the ones who get that being an ally isn’t about being thanked, it’s about showing up differently even when it’s uncomfortable." ... 1/2
