It took an embarrassingly long time to narrow to 4 and I'm still flip floppin on my choices (threw in two old art ones because I STILL have these cards)

(Among other things of course) but having the arms cutting the line art of each other, for example, means you can have elbows without line breaks in them
(That little overlap line is on the overlay layer, and only appears when the shapes overlap)

You can tell by the change in thickness between the jaw and mouth line that the mouth is cutting the jaw and also cut to it
(The green hatches in the mouth represent the cutting mask that would be inside the mouth that's cutting the head and jaw)

For the construction I imagine the breakdown has the jaw as a sync'd layer with the mouth for the most control, with a 'hero' mouth for each view that would have deformers on it (otherwise, having a full mouth kit with deformers would be WAY too heavy) and the rest being swaps

You're on the right track with the overhanging jaw being cut into the head, only it would be done with lineart cutters instead of Autopatches. APs can't work in z-depth so they're either used as cutting mattes, or, more commonly now, are replaced altogether by a colourart layer cut by the lineart
