A man who has nothing in particular to recommend him. @JGAMPHO on Twitter.
Thompson, for all his faults, still believed in the mission of journalism. He didn't catch and kill stories for powerful friends, he couldn't stop himself from blowing the lid off scoops. And he was a good writer as well.

Retributive justice is just as much a social construction as restorative justice, it just has a longer history. I recommend reading The Invention of Good and Evil for a good primer on this. www.ebooks.com/en-au/book/2...

The unit of Horsepower was invented by James Watt to help him sell steam engines to mine owners by providing a simple comparitor between the engines and a horse trotting at a steady pace on a treadmill, which was how most pumping stations were powered at the time.

No, you're correct.

Both things can be true at the same time! Clearly we need to rein in the speculative mania of the VC industry and put the antitrust hammer down on big tech. We've developed a very unhealthy idea of what institutional structures are needed to enable and encourage technological development.

That whole "hyperloop got California HSR derailed" thing was always a cope. California did not need Elon's help to fuck up rolling out a major infrastructure project, and at the time he actually was upfront that he had no plans to develop the concept, it was just an idea he wanted to put out there.

I have four email addresses and an average of two accounts per social platform and I've never understood the "I'll just do all of my online activity from one place under my own name!" people. How can you be like that?

November 13, 2025 at 6:01 AM
We don't even need new legislation, just a blitz of enforcement of the sex crime, financial crime and tax laws already on the books would put the fear of god into most of the ruling class.

Say what you will about the ignorance and selfishness of the average American, pop culture has done a pretty good job impressing "Nazis bad" into the American self-image.
November 12, 2025 at 2:07 AM
Without Trump and with a bunch of loathsome openly Nazi edgelords in charge? I just can't see it appealing. I could see Americans going for generic authoritarianism dressed up in Trumpian razzamatazz, but outright Nazi revisionism has to alienate the broad middle of the country.

It ebbs and flows, but in the 19th century congressional leaders could easily rival presidents in importance, look at Henry Clay.
