Amid and despite *all this* (this is fine), I'll be visiting Northwestern University tomorrow to give a talk on Moby-Dick, metaphors, and my favorite cetacean art of the last several years by Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Wu Tsang, and mayfield brooks. Chicagoans I'd love to see you!

I LOVED working with the editors at @limnpress.bsky.social : I loved the collaborative peer review process, and I loved being part of a cohort thinking together about obsolescence. I also appreciated the deep care that went into editing and design. I mean, look at this thing. 2/

Emerson and Fuller's Transcendentalist journal, THE DIAL, has relaunched, thanks to the labor and love of @chrishanlon.bsky.social. I'm so honored to have an essay in the inaugural issue, where I write about climate change, Thoreau and global shipping.

A gloriously oceanic moment (yes, in Illinois) at the Tarble show "Who Speaks for the Oceans?" Favorites: Ursula Biemann's short film ACOUSTIC OCEAN and Jenny Kendler and Andrew Bearnot's WHALE BELLS (made from glass and fossilized whale ear bones!), works prompting deep listening.

A miracle: Deke Weaver, Jen Allen, brilliant cast and crew brought the ocean to Illinois with CETACEAN. I'm sitting with these lines from the performance: "Ships are built for buoyancy. Many compromised vessels can be salvaged." Not climate doomism or false hope but something better & more real.

I forgot to post a picture of the generous blurbs that @hesterblum.bsky.social and @jeffreyinsko.bsky.social wrote! I still can't believe THESE folks wrote THESE words about my book. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

In CH 5, I read Rockwell Kent's MD illustrations as "skeuomorphs," works that refer to, or appear as though they were made by, older practices and tech. Skeuomorphs = rendering obsolescence through design. (Your iPhone does this too.) 14/

I just got the first physical copy of my book, RENDERED OBSOLETE: Energy Culture and the Afterlife of U.S. Whaling (@uncpress.bsky.social )! Much more to say before (and after!) the August 29 release. But for now, look! It's a real thing in the world! It casts a shadow on my table!

If I had a time machine, I'd take at least one trip to 1970 to visit African Rhythms, the jazz club Randy Weston co-owned with Abdeslam Akaaboune in Tangier, Morocco. Here's the legendary club's business card, designed by eminent painter Mohamed Melehi.

Spotted this amazing design on the gas tank door of a classic Mercedes collective taxi in Tetouan, Morocco. Now obsessed with gas tank door art, petroculture par excellence and extra poignant on a day of killing heat.

I don’t know what to do with all of the proliferating social media apps, but I assume these kittens in my neighborhood in Tangier belong on all of them
